Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Aaron Brown blasted his ninth home run of the season, and Willians Astudillo turned in another multi-hit performance to lead the Clearwater Threshers in a 6-4 win over the Tampa Yankees at Bright House Field.
Brown crushed a line shot over the wall in right in the sixth inning, tying the ballgame at four. Astudillo meanwhile finished 2-for-3 with a walk to increase his league-leading average to .330.
Clearwater (30-18) fell behind early, as Ericson Leonora lifted a two-run homer in the second inning against starter Mark Leiter, Jr. that put the Yankees ahead 2-0.
The Threshers bats came to life in the fourth.
Andrew Pullin got things started with a leadoff walk, and Astudillo singled with one out. Chace Numata followed with a base hit of his own to center, scoring Pullin to cut the deficit in half.
After Brown reached on an error to load the bases, Mitch Walding pulled the teams even by delivering a sacrifice fly to score Astudillo. Derek Campbell then blooped a single into right to give the Threshers the lead.
The Yankees (22-25) rallied for two runs to take the lead in the sixth, but the Threshers would have the final word.
Brown knotted it back up with his solo bomb in the sixth, and Clearwater grabbed the lead an inning later. Malquin Canelo walked, stole second and advanced to third on an error, forcing Tampa to bring the infield in with one out.
Carlos Tocci then hit a slow grounder to short, and with Canelo breaking for the plate on contact, the Yankees took the out at first base as Canelo crossed the dish with the go-ahead run.
Campbell extended the advantage to two an inning later, as his sacrifice fly scored pinch-runner Jesmuel Valentin to make it 6-4.
Miguel Nunez worked around a pair of two-out infield singles and a walk in the ninth, but stranded the tying run in scoring position to earn his fifth save in as many tries. Jesse Therrien (5-0) picked up the victory in relief, tossing a scoreless seventh.
Clearwater has now won five straight, and will look to take the series over Tampa on Friday when Yacksel Rios (5-2) takes the hill against Jonathan Holder (5-3). First pitch is at 6:30 p.m., and the call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:15 p.m.
Friday will also feature a post game concert with the Dave Matthews Tribute Band, as part of the Threshers Summer Concert Series presented by Leinenkugel and New Belgium. Tickets can be purchased here, at the Threshers Box Office, or by calling 727-467-4457.
