Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

NORWICH, CT --- Joey Havrilak hit a three-run homer and Josh Lester a two-run homer as the Connecticut Tigers built a 7-2 lead and then held off a late Vermont rally for a 7-6 New York-Penn League victory over the Lake Monsters Saturday night at Dodd Stadium.

Havrilak gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning with his three-run homer off Vermont reliever Cody Kurz (0-3) before Richie Martin cut the deficit with a two-run double scoring Nick Collins and Ryan Howell. Lester hit his two-run shot in the fifth inning off Chris Kohler, who also allowed a Keaton Jones RBI single and Cam Gibson squeeze bunt in the sixth for a 7-2 Connecticut advantage.

But the Lake Monsters would once again rally as Jesus Lopez and Collins led off the seventh inning with singles before Howell smacked a three-run homer to left, cutting the deficit to 7-5. The homer was the second of the season for Howell, who was 3-for-4 with two runs and a double to go along with the three-run blast. Collins was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Martin was 3-for-5 and is now 7-for-14 with four runs and four RBI in his three games since joining Vermont.

Lake Monsters still trailed 7-5 in the ninth when Collins and Howell opened the inning with back-to-back singles and Mikey White lined a one-out single to load the bases. Stephen Pallares struckout for the second out before a Chris Iriart forced home Collins to get Vermont within a run, but Drew Smith struckout Seong-min Kim to end the game and hand the Lake Monsters (5-10) their second straight 7-6 setback (lost 7-6 in 11 innings at Tri-City Friday).

Vermont starter Bubba Derby, a sixth-round pick in 2015 draft out of San Diego State, allowed three hits with one walk and five strikeouts over 2 2/3 scoreless innings in his first outing for the Lake Monsters. Chase Edwards (2-1) earned the win for the Tigers despite being charged with five runs over three innings. Havrilak, Kade Scivicque and Jose Zambrano each had two hits for Connecticut (8-7), while Pat MacKenzie was 3-for-5 with a run scored.

The loss dropped Vermont's record to 5-10 or worse for the first time since 2006. The Lake Monsters play two more games at Connecticut (Sunday at 4:05 pm and Monday at 7:05 pm) before an off day on Tuesday and then return to historic Centennial Field to begin a six-game homestand on Wednesday.
