Spinners Top ValleyCats 6-5 on July 4th

TROY - Pat Porter went 3-5 with a home run, two doubles, and four runs batted in, while Elieser Hernandez struck out 10 batters and allowed only one hit in four relief innings, but the Tri-City ValleyCats fell to the Lowell Spinners 6-5 in front of 5,513 fans on the Fourth of July at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

The Spinners jumped out to an early lead when second baseman Hector Lorenzana followed up an RBI by Josh Ockimey with a three-run home run off of 'Cats starter Rogelio Armentero. One inning later, Andrew Benintendi, the Boston Red Sox first round draft pick, hit a two-run home run to center field to help the Spinners build a 6-0 lead.

Tri-City got on the board in the fourth, when Porter scored on a wild pitch. Then in the bottom of the fifth, he hit a two-run double off of the top of the right field wall, before smashing a two-run home run to right field in the seventh.

Unfortunately, that was the final scoring done by the ValleyCats. as a ninth-inning rally fell short and the Spinners prevailed 6-5.

Porter's four RBI's were his first four runs driven in as a professional while the home run and two doubles were also career firsts, as well.

Hernandez's 10 strikeouts were also career highs, as the right-hander struck out all but four of the 14 batters he faced.

The Spinners and ValleyCats return to "The Joe" on Sunday, at 5:00 p.m. for the second game in this three-game series. On the mound for the ValleyCats will be RHP Trent Thornton (1-0, 1.00), with LHP Luis Ramos (1-1, 4.91) getting the start for Lowell.
