Lowell Spinners News Release
TROY, NY - Making their annual pilgrimage to the Tri-City ValleyCats to celebrate America, the Lowell Spinners jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and held on for a 6-5 win to celebrate America Saturday night at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. The Spinners received home runs from Hector Lorenzana, a three-run shot, and Red Sox No. 1 Draft Pick Andrew Benintendi, his first, in the win.
Lowell (12-4) got on the board first in the second inning. After a single from rehabbing outfielder Henry Ramos led off the inning, Josh Ockimey brought him home with a run-scoring double. After a Tucker Tubbs single put runners on the corners, Lorenzana crushed the first pitch he saw over the left field wall to give Lowell a 4-0 lead.
The Spinners would add to their lead in the third inning. After Mitch Gunsolus led off the inning with an infield single, Benintendi hit a blast over the right field wall on an 0-1 pitch to give the Spinners a 6-0 lead.
Tri-City (7-9) got a run back in the fourth inning after Pat Porter led off the inning with a double. A wild pitch by Dioscar Romero cut the Spinners lead to 6-1. The ValleyCats would get another pair of runs in the fifth inning against Logan Boyd, making his professional debut. It was Porter again, plating both with a two-run double.
The lead was cut to one in the seventh inning, as Tri-City built a rally around a one-out walk and Porter, who was the Spinners' nemesis all night, hit a two-run home run to pull the ValleyCats within one.
The Spinners held on to the tenuous lead in the ninth as Bobby Poyner, making his professional debut, put a pair of runners on but struck out pinch hitter Kolbey Carpenter to end the game and preserve the win.
Playing in his second game, Benintendi again picked up a two-hit night, going 2-for-4 with his first professional home run. Ramos, whose rehab assignment was transferred from the GCL Red Sox to Lowell Friday, made his first appearance with the Spinners going 1-for-4.
Romero allowed just the one run, but needed 80 pitches through four innings. Boyd, a 19th round selection in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft, allowed two runs on three hits and a walk in his first inning of work. Edwar Garcia (2-0, 2.00) picked up the win with three innings of relief, allowing two runs on one hit and three walks, striking out a pair. Poyner, a 14th round selection also making his professional debut, danced around a hit and walk to record the save.
The two teams meet again Sunday evening when Luis Ramos (1-1, 4.91) gets the ball for a 5pm first pitch.
