Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (8-7) won the first of three games over the Vermont Lake Monsters (5-10) by a final score of 7-6. For Connecticut it was their sixth win in the last seven games.

At one point Connecticut led 7-2 but Vermont came storming back. With Chase Edwards (2-1) on the mound Vermont scored three runs in the top of the seventh innings on a three-run homerun by left fielder Nick Howell (3-4, HR, 3 RBI, 2B, 2 R) to draw within two at 7-5.

The score remained the same until the top of the ninth. With Drew Smith (SV 1), who pitched a perfect eighth, on the mound for Connecticut the Lake Monsters loaded the bases with just one out. Smith was able to strike out centerfielder Steven Pallares for the second out, but a walk to the next batter made it 7-6. However, on three pitches Smtih was able to strike out designated hitter Seong-min Kim to end the game.

The Tigers scored first on a three-run homerun by Joey Havrilak (2-4, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R) making it 3-0. With the score 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth Josh Lester hit his first homerun of the season, a two-run shot to reestablish the Connecticut lead at 3, now 5-2.

Bubba Derby made his first start of the year for Vermont throwing two and two thirds innings of shutout baseball. The loss in the game ended up being charged to Cody Kurz (0-3). The win went to Edwards for Connecticut with Smith picking up the save.
