Lake Makes a Splash in Bisons' 5-2 Win

June 12, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

Needing to bounce back from a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, Junior Lake led the way as the Buffalo Bisons used 12 hits to earn a 5-2 win against the Charlotte Knights at Coca-Cola Field Sunday afternoon.

After A.J. Jimenez laced a two-out double in the second inning, Lake got the Bisons on the board as his high fly ball drifted out beyond the Geico sign in left field, giving the Herd the early 2-0 lead.

The Bisons then pushed their advantage to three in the third. Matt Dominguez hit the team's third double in as many innings and came in as an unearned run a batter later, as Casey Kotchman's fly ball was dropped by right fielder Nicky Delmonico.

Andy Burns led off the bottom of the fourth with Buffalo's fifth extra-base hit of the afternoon, ripping a liner into the left-field corner. After A.J. Jimenez punched a groundout to the right side to move Burns up a bag, the second baseman was chauffeured home on Lake's third RBI of the game, a sac fly to center.

Dalton Pompey kept the offense going in the following frame as he bunted his way aboard. The infield single extended the center fielder's hitting streak to 13 games, the longest current active streak in the International League. The 23-year-old then stole his ninth base of season before putting the Herd up 5-0 on Domonic Brown's third hit of the contest.

"It was great. Especially after the last two games were pretty tough, it was nice to bounce back." said Pompey of his team's performance before he was asked about his personal accomplishments.

"The hitting streak is great but I know eventually it's going to come to an end. I don't know when that is but I'm going to ride this out as long as I can."

Drew Hutchison pitched his sixth quality start for Herd, allowing only two runs, both on Danny Hayes' 10th homer, over six full frames. The Floridian fanned seven batters while holding the league's best offense to just three hits.

"I thought it was solid. I just had a few too many deep counts but I thought I threw the ball well," said Hutchison of his 12th start.

"With the exception of the home run, I thought everything was pretty good."

The righty hurled 97 pitches to even his record at 3-3.

Bo Schultz continued the strong pitching as he took the mound to begin the seventh. The fireballer used his 97 MPH fastball to punch out three of the six Knights that came his way.

"It was nice to get Schultz out there. He looked really good for two innings," said manager Gary Allenson of his reliever.

Schultz has allowed only one run over 8.2 innings since being optioned back from the Blue Jays.

Ryan Tepera then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, fanning Charlotte's final two batters to end the game and pick up the save.

"We got timely hitting, led by Junior Lake. It was a total team effort" concluded Allenson.

The Bisons continue their homestand, beginning a three-game set with the Durham Bulls Monday night. Buffalo won three of four games in North Carolina just over a month ago.

BISONS NOTES:

Darrell Celiliani was caught stealing for the first time after swiping a bag in each of his first seven attempts this season...With his clean final frame, Ryan Tepera took over the team lead on his seventh save...The three-hit effort was Domonic Brown's fifth this season...The victory keeps Buffalo from falling below the .500 mark at home for the first time since May 31. The Herd is now at 16-15 at Coca-Cola Field.
