Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders plated a season-best 15 runs and survived the host Clippers at Huntington Park on Saturday night, 15-12. The RailRiders have secured the franchise's first series win at Columbus since the SWB Yankees took three of four from May 19-22, 2012.
I AM THE LAW: Aaron Judge blasted a three-run homer on a 2-for-4 night with a walk and three runs scored. He has hit safely in eight of his last nine, going 13-for-33, slashing .394/.512/.576/1.088. The run started with a two-hit performance versus Columbus on June 3 that saw him snap an 0-for-24 drought.
ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMIN: Ben Gamel went 4-for-5 with three infield singles, an RBI, his team-leading 12th stolen base and three runs scored. A .250 hitter after an 0-for-4 showing versus Louisville on May 24, he has since gone 22-for-64 over his last 16 games, slashing .344/.432/.453/.886.
@THE_HIGSTER: Kyle Higashioka went 2-for-5 with a pair of two-run doubles. After going 0-for-4 in his first 2016 Triple-A game, he has hit safely in 11 straight, going 20-for-44 with slashes of .455/.478/.932/1.410. In that time he has five homers, six doubles, 17 RBIs and 12 runs scored. He has caught four SWB shutouts over his 11 games behind the plate. When he joined SWB this season, Higashioka had 32 career homers over 443 games and 1,702 plate appearances (1HR for every 53.19 plate appearances). In 12 games and 50 plate appearances with this year's RailRiders, he has five homers (1HR per 10.0 plate appearances). Only Buffalo's Dalton Pompey, who rides an active 12-game hitting streak, has a better current run of swinging success in the IL than Higashioka's 11-gamer.
INTERNATIONAL (LEAGUE) MAN OF MYSTERY: The RailRiders received Tyler Austin singled, walked, drove in two runs and scored once as the clean-up man. He has six doubles and two homers in just eight games and 34 plate appearances with this year's RailRiders, hitting .387. In his first go-round at Triple-A in 2015, he hit eight doubles and four home runs in 299 plate appearances. His 40 RBIs between Double-A and Triple-A have him tied with Adv.-A Tampa's Miguel Andujar for the most on the Yankees' farm this year.
SO YOU'RE SAYING THERE'S A CHANCE: The RailRiders have secured SWB's first series victory at Columbus since the vagabond SWB Yankees took three of four from May 19-22, 2012. SWB had lost 10 of 11 at Huntington Park until Friday's victory. Today they seek the first sweep of Columbus since taking all four from July 10-13, 2008. That finale required 11 innings for an 8-6 win.
SUPER SERIESOUS: SWB and Columbus split the 2015 series, 3-3, with four one-run games. Eighteen of the clubs' last 37 clashes have come down to a single score with Columbus taking 11 of those close calls. The RailRiders have lost 20 of the last 27 meetings with 12 one-run finals. Today marks the rubber match for the season series, which stands tied 3-3. SWB last won the season series in 2012, 6-2.
AT THE START: The opening inning today will be tossed by rehabbing lefty reliever Chasen Shreve. Scheduled starter Tyler Webb will follow. Shreve threw 20 fastballs off a mound with the big club on Tuesday. He went 6-2 with a 3.09 ERA in 59 relief appearances for last year's Yankees, but has gone 1-1 with a 5.21 ERA this year. In 19.0 innings for this year's Bombers he has allowed seven homers. He has been on the big-league DL since May 26 (left shoulder AC joint sprain). He last pitched in a game on May 25 versus Toronto (1IP, 3H, 3R, 2HR, 1IR/1S). Shreve made one appearance for last year's RailRiders on April 15 versus Rochester (2.1IP, 4H, 0R, 1BB, 0K, 2IR/2S - BS).
OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders have won four of five...The RailRiders' 15 runs made for their highest-scoring performance since a 16-2 demolition of the Tides at Norfolk on May 4, 2014...The 12 runs allowed marked the most surrendered by SWB pitching since a 12-8 loss at Lehigh Valley on June 30, 2015...The quartet of pitchers used by the RailRiders allowed a season-high three home runs and a season-high-tying 16 hits...Jesus Aguilar joined Lehigh Valley's Domonic Brown (2HR, April 20) as the only SWB foes to launch multiple homers in a single game against the RailRiders this season...Aguilar's pair of big flies has him tied with Rochester's Adam Brett Walker for the IL lead at 13...Jake Cave, who had the night off and at the time was in the dugout, was ejected during Tyler Austin's seventh-inning at-bat by home-plate umpire Toby Basner...Nick Swisher went 3-for-4 with a homer, three RBIs, a walk and four runs scored...Hit it second in the order, the highest he has hit all season with SWB...The home run was his first as a right-handed hitter this season after launching four as a lefty...Despite allowing 19 runs over the first two games of this series, SWB still owns the league's best team ERA at 3.16, tying it with Indianapolis.
