Toledo Drops Final Game of Road Trip to Rochester
June 12, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
A gorgeous June Sunday afternoon featured a scintillating southpaw standoff in Rochester, but timely hitting proved to be the difference as the Red Wings eventually defeated the Mud Hens, 9-7, at Frontier Field.
Daniel Norris and Logan Darnell, the southpaw starters Sunday, both had their good stuff going early. However, it would turn out to be Darnell's day, as he went eight excellent innings for his seventh win of the season, allowing only one earned run, seven hits, and two walks while striking out four. Norris was hindered by timely Red Wings hitting and a lack of control, as he only went five innings while giving up four earned runs, six hits, three walks, and struck out four.
Eddie Rosario started the bottom of the second inning with a solid single to left field and came around to score after the friendly face of the former Mud Hen, Tommy Field, ripped an RBI single to make it 1-0 Rochester.
Toledo looked to get on the board in the fifth inning after Steven Moya scorched a single to right field and Chad Huffman dumped a double into the left field corner putting Hens on second and third with nobody out. With the infield playing back, McGehee hit a sharp ground ball to first, but Moya was cut down at home, leaving runners on the corners with one out. Tyler Collins stepped in and bounced out to an inning-ending 3-6-3 double play.
The Red Wings extended their lead to 2-0 after three consecutive well placed seeing-eye singles off the bats of Adam Walker, Carlos Paulino, and James Beresford. The floodgates remained open in the fifth after Kennys Vargas got his league leading 42nd RBI courtesy of a bases loaded walk to make it 3-0 Rochester, and Eddie Rosario finished the fifth inning scoring with an RBI groundout to make it 4-0.
Dustin Molleken made his way to the mound in the sixth, relieving Norris, and after pitching a scoreless sixth, Molleken gave up a two-run double to Rosario making it 6-0 Rochester in the seventh inning. Angel Nesbitt replaced Molleken on the hill and allowed a Wilfredo Tovar sacrifice fly, which made it 7-0.
Toledo said sayonara to the shutout in the top of the eighth inning after Casey McGehee, who led off with a double off the wall in left, came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Miguel Gonzalez. The Hens made it 7-2 when Dixon Machado lofted a sac fly to right field plating Jordany Valdespin, who pinch ran for Collins.
The Red Wings tacked on their eighth run of the game in the bottom of the eighth, as James Beresford doubled home Adam Walker, and then Rochester regained their comfortable seven run lead when Logan Schafer blooped a single to right field scoring Beresford, making it 9-2.
The Rochester insurance runs proved to be very important, as Toledo put together a too-little-too-late comeback in the ninth inning. A five run frame featured a Chad Huffman RBI double coupled with a Valdespin RBI groundout, back-to-back RBI singles courtesy of Tyler Bortnick and Miguel Gonzalez, and an RBI Dixon Machado double off of Rochester's David Martinez to make it 9-7. Nick Greenwood eventually came on for Rochester to induce a game-ending groundout off the bat of Jones with runners on first and second.
Toledo returns home for seven games at Fifth Third Field, beginning Monday night with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch tilt against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, as Matt Crouse looks for his second win of the 2016 season.
Toledo Tidbits:
JaCoby Jones Getting it Done- JaCoby Jones has played seven games for the Toledo Mud Hens in his young baseball career, and he has now hit in safely in all seven games. The versatile 24-year-old, who played third Sunday, continues to show he can play outfield with some range and a steady infield. Jones also successfully batted third, which will certainly lengthen and support the Mud Hens lineup.
Fulmer, the Former Hen- Michael Fulmer continues to be the talk of Tiger town. The flamethrower has strung together 28.1 consecutive scoreless innings, which is a major league best for the 2016 season. Fulmer currently has six wins and is in line for his seventh after pitching today against the Yankees, and the former Mud Hen has lowered his ERA to 2.52, the best amongst the Detroit starters.
All-Star Game Voting- Triple-A All-Star Game voting is under way and your Toledo Mud Hens need YOUR votes. Send the likes of Steven Moya (leading the IL with 12 home runs), Chad Huffman (leading the IL with 37 RBI), Casey McGehee (5th in the IL with a .315 batting average), and Preston Guilmet (a Hen pen hurler with a stingy 0.88 ERA). All-Star Game voting will remain open until June 26.
