Rochester Honkers News Release

The Rochester Honkers finally got the first win monkey off their back, after four unsuccessful tries to start the season. It may have taken ten innings, but the Honkers are finally in the win column, with a 2-1 win.

It came when Jake Kurth (Jr, Augustana) sent a full count pitch up the middle with runners on second and third, scoring Matt Beyer (Jr, UW-Whitewater). Beyer had a big day for the Honkers as well going 3-5 from the plate, as well as three stolen bases.

Aaron Siefken (Jr, Bethany Lutheran) got the start on the hill for the Honkers, Siefken pitched a great game, going six innings and only shelling out one walk. In his six innings, Siefken struck out five batters. The Honkers pitching staff issued a season low three walks today, and the defense was perfect, not making a single error.

The Honkers did have chances to close out the game earlier, stranding the bases loaded twice in the game, once in the first and eighth innings. The Honkers had Jake Marasco (So, Kansas) on third base with no outs but failed to drive him in.

One of those batters was Kurth, who eventually got his redemption in the tenth inning. Kurth battled back from a one ball two strike count, to drive the full count pitch for an obvious base hit.

Bryce Rippentrop (So, Dakota County Technical College) got the decision, pitching a perfect ninth and tenth innings, seeing six batters and sending them back to the dugout. Jordan Jakubov (RsJr, Kansas) pitched the seventh and eighth inning, allowing only two hits, while walking one.

With the win, the Honkers record will move to 1-4in the early parts of the season, heading into their first long road trip, all the way to Thunder Bay, Ontario. Alex Alemann (So, St. Louis University) will get the nod on the mound for the Honkers, it will be his second start of the season. Alemann was the opening day starter, pitching five innings, and getting the loss.

The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm. The next Honker home game is Thursday June 9, when the Duluth Huskies travel to Rochester, first pitch is at 7:05pm.
