Defense Fails Woodchucks, Bullfrogs win 5-2

WAUSAU-June 5, 2011-The Wisconsin Woodchucks lost their second consecutive ballgame Sunday afternoon to the visiting Green Bay Bullfrogs, dropping their record to 1-4 on the young season.

The Woodchucks would be swept in their short two-game home series with Green Bay, as the Bullfrogs improved their record to 4-1. Bullfrogs' reliever Greg Blohowiak took the win, while Woodchucks' reliever Cameron Amsrud took the loss

The 'Chucks moved a runner into scoring position in each of the first three innings, but were unable to break through off the tough Bullfrogs' righty Cory Kyle, who went five strong innings-allowing only three hits and two walks, while striking out four and allowing no runs.

Woodchucks' starter Jonathon Boersma -who had pitched six innings only three nights earlier, and one inning the night before that- pitched a masterful seven innings of baseball, allowing no runs to score off of five hits and one walk.

Boersma, who topped out at around 75 MPH on the radar gun, did not record a strikeout, but showed impressive command and befuddling movement, as he did not allow a hard hit ball through an efficient, effective 83 pitches.

The game went scoreless into the bottom of the seventh inning, when the 'Chucks' lumber looked to reward their starters' impressive performance, as Bullfrogs' reliever Greg Blohowiak would begin his second inning of work.

With one down, Carlos Escobar Jr. -who was 1-2 with two walks, two runs scored and a double- walked, advanced on a passed ball to second, moved to third on as Derek Peterson reached on a fielding error, and scored when the newly signed Dylan Peterson smacked an RBI single for his first Woodchucks hit.

Taking a 1-0 lead into the eighth inning, the wheels came off the proverbial bus, as the Woodchucks' makeshift defense unraveled for a second consecutive night.

Cameron Amsrud would start the eighth for the Woodchucks, allowing leadoff hitter Cameron Dullnig to reach base on a bloop single, before missing the covering fielder at second base on the following play wide to the left, when Joe Betcher mildly hit a groundball back up the middle. After getting the next batter to pop out, Amsrud would allow an RBI double to Billy Moon, which would tie the game and put runners at second and third.

The following batter would hit a soft single into right field, which would bounce past a charging Alex Grunenwald -who had just replaced an injured Derek Peterson in right- and allow two runs to score. After Amsrud would surrender another single and put runners on the corners, the 'Chucks would bring in usual shortstop Shain Stoner to try and stem the Bullfrogs' attack.

After striking out his first batter faced, Stoner, who reached 91 on the radar gun, would allow a two-RBI single from Nick Stein, giving the Bullfrogs a 5-1 lead.

Only one of the Bullfrogs' five runs was earned.

The 'Chucks would get one back in the ninth, as Carlos Escobar -who has made an extremely impressive two-game debut in Wausau- would leadoff with a double, and score on an Alex Grunenwald RBI groundout, before ending the game 5-2, Green Bay.

The Woodchucks committed four errors on Sunday night, matching Saturday's total, while their seven hit total would do little to improve their .207 team batting average.

The Woodchucks will look to close out their home stand with a win, as the 4-1 Madison Mallards come to town for one game, before the series moves to Madison for games two and three. The 'Chucks will then make the trek to Battle Creek for two, before returning home next Saturday.

Jerad Harvey, the 'Chucks opening day starter will take the mound at 6:35 p.m. CDT on Monday night.
