FrogVille, WI - The Bullfrogs gave up the tying run in the eighth inning, but they score two in the eleventh for a 4-2 win over the Wisconsin Woodchucks in their first road game of the year.
The eleventh inning started with a walk to Chris Migani who entered the game in the ninth as a pitch runner. The next hitter was Dan Gerow of Davidson College. He rocketed a double down the left field line that the Woodchucks' left fielder struggled to corral in the corner allowing Migani to score. Ryan Schilter would then bunt Gerow to third with his third sacrifice of the night before Steven Halcomb drove in an insurance run with a single to make it 4-2.
The Bullfrogs closer John Colella came out for his fourth inning of relief in the bottom of eleventh and walked the first hitter on four pitches. Colella would retire the next three hitters with two strikeouts for the harded earned victory. Colella pitched 4.1 innings allowing one unearned run while striking out five in the gutsy 74 pitch performance to save the bullpen which had just one other available arm.
The game went to extras because of an unearned run that came across in the eighth without the benefit of a base hit. In the eighth frame Colella retired the first two hitters before a walk to Shain Stoner. The Woodchucks shortstop advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt that went off the glove of first baseman Andy Hunter. Stoner moved to third when he got caught between second and third. He was caught after Gerow made an excellent pick on a fastball in the dirt that Stoner thought was going to the backstop. Gerow quickly threw to second base and Stoner broke to third making it there without a throw.
This all happened during Austin Coleman's at bat. On a 1-2 pitch he hit a sharp ground ball to the 'Frog's second baseman Cameron Dullnig who had the ball take a bad hop that nearly hit him in the face. Stoner scored on the error to tie the game at two.
Colella had entered the game in the seventh in relief of starter Drew Bradshaw who received the no decision after leaving the game with two outs in the seventh. Bradshaw left the game with a lead after allowing one run in his Bullfrogs' debut going 6.2 innings striking out six and walking no one. The San Jose State Spartan retired the first two hitters in every inning. The left handed Bradshaw finished the game strong by retiring twelve hitters in a row before he hit the final batter he faced in the seventh.
The Wisconsin Woodchucks started the scoring in the second inning. Garrett Yrigoyen hit a two out triple and scored on a double by Carlos Escobar Jr. Green Bay responded in the very next frame scoring a pair of unearned runs thanks to a two out error by the Woodchucks right fielder.
The win improves Green Bay's record to 3-1 on the young season. The Bullfrog's will go for their second series win of the year in the finale of the two game set on Sunday evening at 5:05 pm. Tim Giel will start for the 'Frogs in his first outing since his season opening eight inning shutout on Wednesday.
The Bullfrogs return to Joannes Stadium on Monday for a three game series with the Battle Creek Bombers. The 'Frogs will be the first sports team in Green Bay to retire the number four on Monday June 6th at 6:35 pm. Any fan that shows up in the green an gold will receive $4 admission.
