Krizan Blasts in a Pair in Home Opener

The SeaWolves stumbled in their 2016 home opener as they fell to the Binghamton Mets, 12-2 on Thursday night at Jerry Uht Park.

The Mets jumped ahead in the second against Erie starter Myles Jaye. Matt Oberste led off the inning and reached on an error. Victor Cruzano walked and both were doubled home with one out by Colton Plaia. With two outs, Maikis De La Cruz singled home Plaia for a 3-0 Mets advantage.

Binghamton added to its lead in the third. Niuman Romero led off with a double and was doubled home by Dominic Smith for a 4-0 edge. Oberste walked and Cruzano singled home Smith for a 5-0 Mets advantage. Two more RBI hits in the inning from Stefan Sabol and De La Cruz made it a 7-0 Binghamton lead through three.

In the top of the eighth, Binghamton added to its lead against Erie reliever Confesor Lara. Plaia led off with a single and De La Cruz followed with a two-run blast making it 9-0. Four straight hits and a fielder's choice followed as the Mets built a 12-0 lead.

Erie's lone runs came in the last of the eighth against Mets starter Mickey Jannis. Dominic Ficociello led off with a single and Jason Krizan followed with a two-run blast to right making it 12-2. It was the first home run of the season for Krizan who knocked in the only two Erie runs.

Jannis (1-0) carried a no-hitter into the seventh en route to his first win of the year. He allowed two runs on three hits in seven innings of work. Jannis walked one and struck out five in the winning effort.

Jaye (0-1) took the loss in his second start of the season. He allowed seven runs, five earned, on eight hits with two walks and a strikeout in three innings.

One bright spot for the SeaWolves pitching staff was lefty reliever Matt Crouse who hurled three scoreless frames. He allowed just one hit and struck out a season-high four.

The SeaWolves and Mets meet in the second game of a four-game set on Friday night at Jerry Uht Park at 6:35 p.m. RHP Tommy Collier makes his second start of the season for Erie against LHP Andrew Barbosa.
