Trenton Thunder News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - The Trenton Thunder fell in Thursday's road opener to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 6-5 in 10 innings.
Four early runs were unable to carry the pitching staff, with Cale Coshow getting a 4-0 lead before throwing a pitch in the ballgame. Trenton's offense began in the 1st inning when Tyler Austin drew a two out walk to put a pair of runners aboard for Dante Bichette Jr. He connected on a two-run double just up the alley in left-center for a 2-0 lead. A walk to Juan Silva followed, and then Kyle Higashioka delivered a double of his own to plate a pair of runs for the early advantage.
New Hampshire scored three times in the bottom of the 2nd inning- including two runs on a particularly errant sequence on a wild pitch- to cut into the lead. Coshow finished with 6.0 innings of three-hit baseball in which he allowed three runs (2 ER) but walked four and struck out just one batter.
In the 7th inning Caleb Smith allowed a pair of runs including the go-ahead run on a two-out single by Jon Berti for the Fisher Cats to take their first lead of the game, 5-4.
From the end of the 1st inning into the top of the 9th the Thunder offense managed just one hit, and even the top of the 9th inning started with the first two batters being retired in order. That was before Higashioka delivered his first career Double-A home run with the Thunder down to their final strike to tie the game. However, Melky Mesa defeated his former team with a two-out single to score pinch-runner Ian Parmley from second base.
The series continues Friday at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium with a scheduled 6:35 p.m. first pitch. Tomorrow's Thunder starter is TBA but will be opposed by LHP John Anderson (0-0, 2.50). Pregame coverage with Adam Giardino begins starting at 6:20 p.m. on the Trenton Thunder Radio Network.
