RubberDucks Edge Bowie 3-2 in Home Opener
April 14, 2016 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron's Shawn Morimando tossed six shutout innings, and Clint Frazier socked a two-run homer Thursday night as the RubberDucks slipped past the Bowie Baysox, 3-2, in front of a home opener crowd of 7,671, at Canal Park
Turning Point
Frazier broke a scoreless tie with a two-out, two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning off Bowie starter Joe Gunkel (0-2). He drove in Jeremy Lucas who had reached on a single. It was Frazier's second homer of the season, and extended his hitting streak to six games.
Winging It
Morimando (2-0) beat the Baysox for the second time already this season. He scattered four hits and struck out six batters over six innings. At one point he retired seven batters in a row, including four consecutive strikeouts. Right-hander D.J. Brown took over in the seventh and tossed two, nearly-perfect innings, walking only one batter. Louis Head took over in the ninth and allowed a pair of runs, but induced Bowie's Garabez Rosa to ground out to end the game, stranding two men on base. Head earned the save, his first of the season.
Duck Tales
Frazier was 1-4, and is now hitting .286...Bryson Myles followed Frazier's homer with a triple to left-center, but as he arrived at third, the relay throw from Baysox shortstop Adrian Marin ricocheted off his back and bounced into foul territory behind the plate. Myles then sprinted in to score to make it 3-0. Lucas, who entered the day as the league-leader in hitting, was 1-3, which lowered his average to a still-robust .500.
Notebook
Indians outfielder Michael Brantley continued an injury rehabilitation assignment and went 1-2 with a single...Brantley, who is returning from off-season shoulder surgery, started in left field, and left the game after playing five innings...Indians right fielder Lonnie Chisenhall is expected to play for Akron Friday as he works his way back from a wrist injury...The Baysox (1-6) have lost all four games they've played against the RubberDucks...Time of game: 2:24... Attendance: 7,671 (sellout).
On Deck
The RubberDucks and Baysox will meet in Game 2 of the series on Friday night at 6:35. RHP David Hess will start for the Baysox and RHP Michael Peoples is scheduled to get the ball for Akron. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM, the WARF iHeart channel, and the TuneIn Radio App.
