Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins announced today that forward Tom Kostopoulos has been named team captain for the 2013-14 season. Defenseman Brendan Mikkelson and forward Zach Sill have been selected alternate captains.
Kostopoulos, 34, becomes the Penguins' captain for the second time in his career, having held the title from 2002-2004. Signed by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Sept. 3, Kostopoulos is the organization's all-time leader in games played (335), goals (100), assists (153) and points (253). He also ranks first on the team's playoff scoring list with 38 points (11G-27A) in 51 games.
Now entering his 15th year of professional hockey, Kostopoulos was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the seventh round (204th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, and was a member of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins inaugural team in 1999-2000.
After eight seasons away from Northeast Pennsylvania, Kostopoulos returned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton roster this past January, signing a tryout contract with the club. He posted seven points (3G-4A) in 17 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, including his 100th career goal with the club on March 1 against the Hershey Bears.
Kostopoulos has appeared in 630 NHL games with Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Montreal, Carolina, Calgary and New Jersey, totaling 61 goals, 96 assists, 157 points and 723 penalty minutes.
Mikkelson, a seven-year pro, has skated in 196 AHL contests with Portland, Iowa, Toronto, Abbotsford and Syracuse, compiling 66 points (18G-48A) and 150 PIM. The 26-year old was originally drafted by Anaheim (31st overall) in 2005 and has dressed 131 NHL games with the Ducks, Calgary Flames and Tampa Bay Lightning.
Sill has spent all five years of his professional career with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, totaling 30 goals, 37 assists and 241 penalty minutes over 259 games. The 25-year old center from Brookfield, Nova Scotia has also collected 11 points (6G-5A) in 43 postseason contests.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton season ticket packages, including 22-game, 12-game and Flexbook plans, are available by contacting the Penguins directly at 570-208-7367.
