Koopsman Shutout Rafters in 6-0 Loss
August 8, 2013 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release
Alexandria, MN- Greg Maisto (Texas A&M) had perhaps his best start of the season, tossing 6 1/3 innings pitched while striking out seven batters, as the Alexandria Blue Anchors (22-43, 12-21) scored six runs in the last half of the game to top the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (30-37, 11-21), 6-0, Thursday night inside Knute Nelson Stadium. The loss drops the Rafters to 2-4 this season against the North division and dropped the club to 1-2 on their current four-game road trip.
Maisto was at his best Thursday night as the left-handed pitched struck out five of his first nine batters faced, while not giving up a run until the sixth inning after Shea Molitor (Des Moines Area Community College) led off the sixth inning with a double off the center field. Molitor would eventually come around to score on an RBI single by Michael Barash (LSU) to give Alexandria the lead, 1-0.
The one-run lead would be everything Alexandria need as Spencer Koopsman (UC Davis) worked around damage all day long as the sophomore tossed eight shutout innings, while striking out six of the 34 batters faced on the evening.
Wisconsin Rapids had multiple chances throughout the evening to take the lead early in the ballgame as the Rafters clubbed out 10 base hits and stranded nine runners on the evening in the loss.
The biggest missed opportunity came in the sixth inning after Jackson Slaid (Montevallo) roped a lead-off double to deep center field to put a runner in scoring position in a 0-0 game with nobody out. Robbie Coman (Virginia) would reached first base on an infield base hit that left Slaid at second and give the Rafters runners at first and second with nobody out. That would be if for the Rafters in the sixth after Koopsman would record strikeouts against Zack Belanger (Long Beach State) and Marcus Wheeler (Kansas)
The Rafters will conclude a four-game road trip Friday night when the teams finishes a two-game series with the Alexandria Blue Anchors. Fans can listen to tomorrow nights ballgame by tuning into WFHR 1320 AM.
