Lakeshore Chinooks News Release
For a third straight night, the Lakeshore Chinooks could not find any consistent offense, collecting just three hits in a 2-1 loss to the Rochester Honkers in Minnesota Thursday.
Baseball players are always told to have a short memory, for good reason.
Andrew Stevenson (LSU) made up for his costly error in the outfield last night by taking the second pitch of the ballgame deep for a homerun, getting the night off to a great start.
After that, Honker starter Quinn Carter baffled the Chinooks holding the team hitless for the next 5 2/3 innings, striking out 10 in the process.
Chinooks starter Jake Johansmeier (Eastern Illinois University) held his own all night throwing 4 1/3 allowing just one run on five hits before giving way to Tyler Wolfe (Des Moines Area CC with two on and one out in the inning. Wolfe would surrender a walk before getting a ground ball double play to keep the game tied.
Both teams stayed off the scoreboard until the bottom of the eighth when Max Murphy connected on a homerun leading off the inning against reliever Jack Landwehr (Illinois State)
Lakeshore had a golden chance to score in the sixth when Mike Papi (University of Virginia) led off the inning with a double. He moved to third on a wild pitch but had to stay put on a ground ball out by Aaron Machbitz (South Dakota State University). Papi later tried to score on a ground ball back to the pitcher with the contact play on but was cut down easily for out number two.
The loss opens the door for the Eau Claire Express to pull even in the Southern division standings with a win. They found themselves in a wild one with the Duluth Huskies who are one game back of the second and final playoff spot in the North. Leading 6-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Huskies added two and took what would seem to be a comfortable five run lead into the ninth inning. Express sent not so fast scoring seven times all before the second out of the inning was recorded to take it to run lead. But, the Huskies battled back scoring twice on a wild pitch to tie things at 10. At the time of publication the two teams were still tied heading into the top of the 11th inning.
The La Crosse Loggers picked up their third consecutive win over the St. Cloud Rox Thursday and have now pulled even in the loss column with Lakeshore with just three games to play.
