Konopka Called up by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton

WHEELING, WV – The Wheeling Nailers announce today that the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League have called up forward Zenon Konopka. Konopka is a first year professional from Niagara Falls, ONT.

Konopka has appeared in 44 games for the Nailers this season and leads the team in points with 39. He is tied for second on the team in goals with 12 and leads the team with 27 assists. Konopka is also tied for second on the team with four power play goals and is tied for the team lead in game-winning goals with three. This will be the first regular season appearance for Konopka in the AHL, he played in exhibition games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton prior to the start of the Nailers season.

Last night Konopka and Nailers teammate Chris McNamara took part in the 2003 Compuware/ECHL All-Star Game in Estero, FL. The Northern Conference won the game 8-2 over the Southern Conference. Konopka picked up an assist in the game and McNamara had one goal and one assist.

At 8:41 of the second period Konopka set up Andrew Ianiero of the Dayton Bombers to give the Northern Conference a 3-0 lead. P.L. Courchesne of the Johnstown Chiefs also assisted on the goal. McNamara scored the sixth goal of the game for the Northern Conference at 2:23 of the third period. The goal was assisted by Brian McCullough of the Reading Royals and gave the North a 6-1 lead. McNamara assisted on the seventh goal by the Northern Conference at 6:40 of the final period. Jamie Herrington of the Richmond Renegades scored the goal with the other assist going to Geno Parrish of the Greensboro Generals. Goaltender Scott Stirling of the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies was named the Most Valuable Player of the game by making 11 saves on 11 shots in the first period, his only period of work.

The Nailers resume their regular season schedule on Friday in Cincinnati. The Nailers next home game is Friday, January 31 against the Augusta Lynx. Game time is 7:30p.m. at the Wheeling Civic Center. The game against the Lynx will be Mascot Night with several area mascots at the Civic Center providing entertainment throughout the game.
