
Komets Take Sole Possession of Second Place

Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komets earned 7 of 8 points in the 4 games played last week (3-0-1) to move ahead of Quad City for sole possession of second place in the Western Division of the UHL. The Komets hold a 5 point lead over the third-place Mallards after 46 games of the 2005-06 campaign. Fort Wayne is unbeaten in regulation in 7 straight games (5-0-2). The Komets have not lost in regulation at home 4 straight (3-0-1) and have a 4-game unbeaten road streak 4 (3-0-1).
Wednesday the week started with a 4-1 win at Port Huron. Friday the Komets clipped the visiting Kalamazoo Wings 5-4. The only hiccup of the week came at Port Huron Saturday night when the Komets dropped a 5-4 shootout decision. Sunday the Komets rebounded with a 7-3 home win against the Motor City Mechanics to finish week 17 of the season with a 25-17-4 record.
Goodwin nets UHL Player of the Week.....for the first time in his career, Fort Wayne right winger Jonathan Goodwin has been named UHL Sher-Wood Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 12, 2006. The winger registered points in each of the 4 games played scoring 6 goals and adding 3 assists for a 9-point week. Goodwin, 23, started the week with his 3rd career hat trick and added an assist for a 4-point night Wednesday against the visiting Port Huron Flags. Friday he scored 2 goals including the game winner in a 5-4 home win against Kalamazoo. Goodwin's first goal of the game marked his 100th Fort Wayne and UHL career point. Saturday Goodwin dished an assist in a 5-4 shootout loss at Port Huron. Sunday the skater completed the week scoring a power play goal and an assist in a 7-3 home win over Motor City. Goodwin leads the Komets with 21 goals including 9 power play goals after appearing in all 46 games to date and shares the plus/minus lead with Guy Dupuis (D) at +14.
K's off to Rockford Wednesday.....the Komets will skate the 3rd of 4 games at the Rockford MetroCentre this Wednesday night (0-2-0) at 8:00 Fort Wayne time. The IceHogs are the hottest team in the UHL with an 11-game winning streak and lead the league with 35 wins and 75 points after 47 games. The Hogs are 23-2-2 at home. The Komets are 2-5-0 vs Rockford after 7 meetings this season. The IceHogs stopped the Komets 3-1 in the last meeting Jan. 22 in Fort Wayne.
Mallards visit Friday.....Quad City visits for the 5th and final time this year Friday for an 8pm tilt. The Komets are 3-1-0 against the Mallards on Fort Wayne ice and lead the series 4-2-0. The Komets and Quad City are in a battle for 2nd place and a guaranteed playoff berth in the Western Division with the Komets holding a 5-point edge and a game in hand with 9 weeks remaining. The Mallards host Port Huron Tuesday before traveling to Fort Wayne Friday. In their last time out Quad City snapped a 5-game losing streak Saturday night 7-0 over Roanoke. The Komets upended the Mallards 6-1 in their last meeting Jan. 21 at the coliseum.
Generals invade Saturday.....for only the 2nd time this season the Komets will face the Flint Generals this Saturday night at 7:30 when the G-men come to town. The Komets were ambushed by the Generals 1-0 in the only previous meeting of the season Nov. 26 in Fort Wayne. Saturday's game is the 2nd of 7 meetings this season. Flint won 2 of 3 last week after a 7-6 win at Muskegon Sunday afternoon. The Generals will host Rockford Friday before Traveling to Fort Wayne Saturday.
Missouri matinee Sunday.....16 hours after the Komets battle the Flint Generals at home Saturday night, the Komets will face off at the Family Arena in Missouri at 2pm Fort Wayne time Sunday. It's the only Sunday matinee game of the year at Missouri. The Komets lead the season series 5-1-0 including a 3-0-0 record at Missouri. Sunday's match is the 4th of 6 meetings at Missouri. Entering the week, the River Otters are riding a 5-game winless streak and are 1-8-0 in their last 9 games.

500 Club.....Greg Puhalski coached his 500th career win Wednesday, Feb. 8, a 4-1 home win against Port Huron. Puhalski has registered a 502-261-89 (.641) record over his 852 games and 12 seasons as a head coach and has the distinction of the winningest coach in the UHL with 340 victories to date.....the Komets played their 500th UHL regular season game Sunday, Feb. 12, since joining the league in 1999.
Speaking of milestones.....Rob Guinn (D) dished his 100th UHL assist Feb. 8 vs Port Huron.....Guinn also skated his 400th pro game Saturday, Feb. 11 at Port Huron.....Jonathan Goodwin (RW) posted his 100th Fort Wayne UHL career point Friday, Feb. 10 vs Kalamazoo (goal).
Komet streaks.....Lance Galbraith (LW) has a 7-game point streak (4g, 6a).....P.C. Drouin (LW) is on a 6-game point and assist streak (1g, 7a).....Jonathan Goodwin (RW) is riding a 4-game point streak (6g, 3a).....3-game point streaks each for Andrew Luciuk (C, 3g, 2a), Matt Hunter (LW, 1g, 3a) and David Hukalo (RW, 2g, 2a).....goalie Kevin St. Pierre has won his last 3 straight outings and is unbeaten in regulation in 8 straight decisions.
Special K's.....the Komet's specialty teams last week scored on 8 of 25 power plays (32%) and were successful on 28 of 32 penalty kills (87.5%). The Komet power play improved to 3rd-best in the league with a total of 51 goals on 269 power play chances (19.0%) and the penalty kill ranks 2nd with a success rate of 85.5% (272/318).
