
Komets Start New Year with Six-Point Week

Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komets started the new year with a successful 6-point week taking 3 of 4 games played to hold 2nd place in the Western Conference of the UHL with a 19-11-2 record and 48 points after 11 weeks of the 2003-04 campaign.
The Komets continued their New Year's Eve home game tradition upending the visiting Rockford IceHogs 7-3 Wednesday night. The victory was witnessed by a sell-out crowd of 10,507 fans tying a UHL record for regular season game attendance set Oct. 25, 2003 in Fort Wayne during the Komet's season home opener against Kalamazoo. It was also the Komet's 14th straight home win against Rockford. David-Alexandre Beauregard netted his first hat trick of the season and added an assist for a 4-point night while Colin Chaulk passed 3 assists and added a goal for 4 points. Also scoring for the Komets were Ryan Severson, Bobby Stewart and Dustin Virag. Kevin St. Pierre picked up the win stopping 23 of 26 shots.
Friday the Komets traveled to Elmira and stopped the Jackals 5-1 for their 8th road win of the season. Sean Venedam, Danny Stewart, Severson, Chaulk and Beauregard netted Komet goals. St. Pierre earned the win making 26 saves.
Saturday the Komets returned home and dropped a 3-2 decision to the Missouri River Otters. Bobby Stewart and Beauregard scored Komet goals while St. Pierre suffered his 5th loss of the season allowing 3 goals on 21 Missouri shots.
Sunday the Komets finished the 4-game week with a 3-1 win over the visiting Elmira Jackals. Chaulk dished 3 assists in the game while Kelly Perrault, Beauregard and Severson each tallied for the Komets. St. Pierre registered his 15th win of the season stopping 26 of 27 shots in his 9th straight home start.
Chaulk led the Komets for the week with 8 assists and 2 goals for 10 points while Beauregard netted 6 goals and added 2 assists for an 8-point week. St. Pierre finished the week leading the UHL with a 2.29 average after turning away 93 of 101 shots. The Komet's special teams scored 5 goals on 19 power play chances (26.3%) while allowing only 1 power play goal in 14 penalty kills (92.9%).
This week the Komets are slated to skate at Rockford Wednesday before returning to Fort Wayne for another weekend home double-header facing Quad City Friday and Rockford Saturday.

Defenseman Kevin Schmidt has skated in 194 consecutive games and has not missed a regular season or playoff game since his first game with the Komets Oct. 12, 2001, at New Haven.

KOMETS TO RETIRE STEVE FLETCHER'S 77 FRIDAY.....the Komets will add Steve Fletcher's #77 to the list of retired team franchise jersey numbers this Friday night, Jan. 9, when the Komets host the Quad City Mallards. The jersey number retirement ceremony will be held prior to opening faceoff at 8:05pm. The festivities will honor Fletcher's popular career as a Komet spanning 8 seasons including his 1-game appearance last year on Jan. 12, 2003, before officially retiring as a player. Fletcher began his career in Fort Wayne skating 34 games with the Komets during the 1982-83 season. The fan-favorite later joined the Komets for 6 straight seasons from 1990-91 to 1995-96. Fletcher will join 7 other players on the retired number list including Eddie Long (#16), Len Thornson (#11), Terry Pembroke (#5), Robbie Irons (#30), Reggie Primeau (#12), Lionel Repka (#6), and Colin Chin (#26). 4 honorees have had numbers retired to recognize their outstanding service to the Komets including Ken Ullyot (#58), Colin Lister (#59), News Sentinel sports writer Bud Gallmeier (no number) and Bob Chase (#40).
Marathon Night Friday.....Friday night is Marathon Night. As part of Old Time Komet Hockey night, Friday night Komet games start at 8pm and Komet fans can get Fill UP cards at any participating Marathon location around the Fort Wayne area for "buy one, get one free" ticket offers.
