K-Wings Week in Review

The K-Wings hit the ice for three games last week. Kalamazoo rung in the New Year at Wings Stadium on December 31st, as they hosted the Muskegon Fury. Muskegon started the game's scoring 2:43 into the contest, when Robin Bouchard (23) scored on the power play to give the Fury a 1-nothing lead. Just under two minutes later, the Fury power play struck again, this time it was Brant Blackned (16) scoring from the slot to extend the Muskegon lead to 2-0. The K-Wings power play took center stage later in the period, when Jeff Turner lit the lamp for the 15th time this season to cut the Fury lead to 2-1. Kalamazoo scored the equalizer in the second period on the game's only even strength goal. Daniel Carriere (5) scored the even strength goal on a wrist shot from the bottom of the right circle to make the score 2-2. Midway in the period, the Fury regained a 3-2 lead on a power play goal on Bouchard's (24) second goal of the game. Kalamazoo knotted the score up a few minutes later, on a power play goal from Marty Flichel (10) to tie the game at 3-3. After no scoring in the third period, the game headed into a shootout, where the Fury prevailed out scoring the K-Wings 1-nothing in the extra session, as the Fury defeated Kalamazoo by the final of 4-3 in front of a season high 4,914 at Wings Stadium.

Kalamazoo headed down south to Richmond, Virginia to finish off the week with two games against the Richmond RiverDogs. In game one of the two game series on Friday, January 2nd, it would be a game that was filled with penalties and power play opportunities, as 38 minutes of game was played on a power play. In fact, of the seven goals scored between the teams, all of them were scored on a man advantage. Jeff Turner (16) put the K-Wings on the board midway into the opening period on a power play goal to give the K-Wings a 1-0 lead. Richmond tied the game 12:14 into the period on a power play goal of their own, as Dave Shields 7th goal of the season tied the game at 1-1. Kalamazoo would continue their power surge at the 14:51 of the 1st period, when Andrew Luciuk (6) scored on a rebounded to put the K-Wings up 2-1. Turner (17) scored the eventual game winning goal for the K-Wings later in the period with his team leading 17th goal of the year and second of the game. Kalamazoo concluded the scoring in the period when Jim Dube scored his first goal of the year on a slap shot from between the circles extend the K-Wings lead to 4-1. Richmond scored the second period's lone goal when Brian Goudie (5) connected on a power play goal. Kalamazoo answered back in the final period, when Luciuk (7) put back a rebound to collect this second of the game, as the K-Wings cruised to a 5-2 victory.

The K-Wings and RiverDogs continued their two game series on Saturday, January 3rd. Like the night before, the K-Wings made the most of their power play opportunities. Daniel Carriere (6) scored a power play goal from the blue line to start the game's scoring for Kalamazoo. Richmond answered back later in the period, when Derek Shutz got free in front of the K-Wings net and buried his fifth goal of the season. Kalamazoo took control of the game in second period. First it was Jeff Turner (18) that lit the lamp for the ninth time in as many games to give the K-Wings a 2-1 lead. Kalamazoo extended their lead to 3-1 later in the period, Jeff Turner found his younger brother Tim Turner, who finished off a 2 on 1 odd man rush by scoring his fourth goal of the year. The bounces were going the K-Wings way in throughout the weekend, but especially in the third period, when Mark Vilneff shot the puck from the left circle in his own zone towards the ‚¬ËœDogs net. Richmond goaltender Maxime Gingras miss played the puck and the result was Vilneff's first goal of the year to give Kalamazoo a 4-1 lead. Richmond would add another goal, but it wouldn't be enough as the K-Wings defeated the RiverDogs by the final of 4-2.

Fast Forward

Kalamazoo will put their five game unbeaten streak to the test this week as they play three games. The K-Wings will start the week on Wednesday, January 7th, as they concluded their three game road swing when they travel to Port Huron to battle the Beacons. The K-Wings are 0-2-0 against the Beacons this season, with both losses coming at the McMorran Place Arena. The Beacons are 5-3-2 in their last 10 games and start the week tied for fourth place in the Eastern Conference with the Elmira Jackals. The K-Wings return home on Friday, January 9th as they host the Rockford IceHogs. Kalamazoo is 2-1-1 against Rockford this season. Kalamazoo starts the week 8 points ahead of the IceHogs for fourth place in the Western Conference. The K-Wings enter Wings Stadium with a 7 game home-unbeaten streak. Friday will also be "Viva Las Vegas Night" sponsored by WOTV, WRKR, Spirit Airlines and the Paris Hotel. A lucky fan will have the opportunity to win a trip for two to Las Vegas during the first period intermission.

Kalamazoo will conclude the week on Saturday, January 10th, when they travel to Muskegon to play the Fury. The K-Wings are 1-2-1 against the intra-state rivals; however, their lone victory against Muskegon did occur at the Walker Arena. Muskegon starts the week in first place in the Western Conference.

All-Star Bound

The K-Wings will be sending two players to the UHL's Comcast All-Star Classic later this month in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Chad Alban and Guy Dupuis will play in the game on Sunday, January 18th. Fans will select the starters for the game this week by logging onto www.theuhl.com.

300th Victory

With their victory over Richmond last Saturday, K-Wings Head Coach reached a personal milestone. The victory was Reeds 300th of his career.

Home Sweet Home

The K-Wings, who return to Wings Stadium Friday, January 9th, will try to extend their home unbeaten streak when they host the Rockford IceHogs. Kalamazoo is unbeaten at Wings Stadium in their last 7 games dating back to November 21, 2003.

Up to Seven

Marty Flichel, and Andrew Luciuk continued their scoring success last weekend. Both Flichel and Luciuk will carry a seven game scoring streak into Wednesday's night game against Port Huron. The seven game streaks are the longest this season by any K-Wing players.

Road Warriors

The K-Wings, who are currently on a 3 game road swing, will conclude the three game set Wednesday at Port Huron. So far this season, the K-Wings are 10-7-1 away from Wings Stadium. Last season, the K-Wings won a total of 12 games the entire season away from home.

The Obscure Stat of the Week

This season, the K-Wings are 8-2-1 on games played on Saturday's. In their UHL history the Kalamazoo Wings are 36-34-6 on Saturday games.
