Komet's 53rd home opener this Saturday

Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komet's 53rd season as a franchise is underway and they begin their 6th UHL season with a 3-point eastern road trip. The Komets played 3 games in 3 nights over the weekend to get things started for 2004-05.

Friday the K's earned a point in a 3-2 shootout loss at Elmira. Winger Kevin Kotyluk notched the first Komet goal of the season. Skater Chris Grenville added his first goal of the season while goaltender Kevin St. Pierre turned aside 34 of 36 Jackals shots in his first start of the year.

Saturday the Komets took a 3-1 win from the Frostbite of Adirondack. St. Pierre earned his first win of the season making 29 saves on 30 shots. Danny Stewart (shg), Grenville and Tim Krueckl scored for the Komets. Krueckl's goal was his first as a pro and eventual game winner for the Komets.

Sunday the Komets finished their 3-game eastern road swing with a 5-4 loss at Danbury. Scoring for the Komets were Colin Chaulk, P.C. Drouin, Corey Lucas and Grenville. Kelly Shields was given the loss in his first start of the season after stopping 32 of 37 Trasher shots.

This week the Komets get ready for a 2-game weekend. Friday the Komets skate at Port Huron for the Beacon's home opener at 6:05pm (Fort Wayne time). Saturday the Komets open their 53rd home season of hockey in Fort Wayne against the Flint Generals at 7:30pm.

Komet streaks: Winger Chris Genville scored a goal in each of the first 3 games played for a 3-game goal scoring streak (3g) and point-scoring streak (3g, 1a).

Komets on top of the U.....Kevin St. Pierre picks up where he left off last season leading UHL goalies with a 1.50 goals against average and .955 save percentage.....Kevin Kotyluk leads the U with 6 minor penalties.....the Komets were the first (and currently only) team to score a short handed goal on the road (Danny Stewart 10/16 at Adirondack).

Komets of the week.....Player of the Week: Right winger Chris Grenville (3gp, 3g, 1a, 4pts, +3. Goalie of the Week: Kevin St. Pierre (2gp, 120 min, 1-0-1, 2 ga, 1.50 gaa, 63/66, .955 spct).

Forward Tom Nelson added to roster.....the Komets announced today that skater Tom Nelson has been added to the Fort Wayne roster. Nelson, 26, skated 43 games last season with Las Vegas of the ECHL scoring 10 goals and 30 points. The 6-foot, 190-pound center hails from Superior, Wisconsin, and will be starting his 3rd full season of pro play.

Bob Chase starts number 52.....Bob Chase started his 52nd season of Komet hockey play-by-play when he began the call of the game Friday night in Elmira. Chase began describing Komet hockey to his radio listeners in 1953 on WOWO radio AM 1190. All of us at the Komet office congratulate Bob on his 52nd season taking care of business radio-rinkside!
