Quad City Mallards News Release


The Quad City Mallards opened 2004-05 with a 1-1-0 weekend. The Mallards stumbled 8-4 in Rockford on Friday before coming from behind to beat the Flint Generals 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday. The Mallards return to the road this weekend to face Muskegon on Friday and Missouri on Saturday.

Game 1-Mallards 4 at Rockford 8

Drew Otten's goal 66 seconds into the first period gave the Mallards a 1-0 lead and silenced the opening night crowd in Rockford. The Mallards lead evaporated quickly as the Hogs scored four unanswered goals in the first period. Terry Harrison, Chris Gobert, J.C. Ruid and J.F. Dufour tallied for Rockford before Jason Deskins scored a four-on-four goal to cut the Hog lead to 4-2 before the first intermission. The Hogs would pile on four more in the second before the Mallards scored the game's final two goals. Jason Lehoux scored on a Mallard power play at the 14:12 mark of the second, and Russ Guzior scored the third period's lone goal to set the final score at 8-4.

Game 2-Mallards 4 at Flint 3-Shootout

For the second night in a row, the Mallards tallied an early goal. Marty Standish scored on a power play just 2:52 into the first period. The goal was Standish's first as a Mallard. Flint would reclaim the lead with three power-play markers before Jason Lehoux scored with the man advantage at the 14:58 mark of the second. The Mallards dominated the third period, outshooting Flint 17-3, before Mike Kompon scored with 1:32 left in the period to even the game at three goals apiece. Kompon's first professional goal came with the sixth attacker on the ice. In the shootout, Russ Guzior and Joe Dusbabek scored for the Mallards and Jeff Reynaert shut down four of five Flint shooters.

Streaks

Three Mallards recorded points in both of this weekend's games. Mike Kompon had a pair of assists on Friday in his pro debut at Rockford. On Saturday, Kompon scored the game-tying goal and had an assist on Jason Lehoux's power-play goal. Kompon is tied for eighth in the UHL in scoring with four points (a goal and three assists). He has scored in his first four games as a Mallard including three goals and an assist in exhibition play.

Jason Lehoux scored a power-play marker in each of the Mallards first two games. On Saturday in Flint, Lehoux added a pair of assists in the Mallards first win of 2004-05. Lehoux is tied for second in UHL scoring with five points (two goals and three assists) in two games. Lehoux's pair of power-play markers is tied for the league lead.

Kompon's college teammate, Jason Deskins, also recorded points in each of the Mallards first two games. Deskins had a goal and an assist in Rockford and an assist in Flint.

Week Preview

Friday, October 22 at Muskegon

The Mallards look to avenge last spring's playoff sweep this Friday in Muskegon. The Fury went 2-0-0 this weekend with a 6-2 win at Flint and a 5-3 home win over Motor City. Muskegon's Brant Blackned was the UHL's hottest scorer through week one as he tallied a league-leading six points (three goals and three assists) in two games.

Saturday, October 23 at Missouri

The Mallards make their first trip to Missouri this Saturday. Last season, the Ducks swept the season series with the Otters going 12-0-0. The Otters reloaded over the off-season with new coach Kevin Kaminski and star center Jim Montgomery. Center Lars Pettersen leads the Otters in scoring through week one with four points (a goal and three assists) in two games.
