Published on December 13, 2008 under Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Mississippi RiverKings fans who attend Saturday night's (December 13th) game against the Texas Brahmas will have the opportunity to bid on their favorite player's jersey during a post-game jersey auction. They'll also have the chance to bid on a jersey from an NHL veteran goaltender at the same time.
Saturday's game has been dubbed "Autism Night" and the evening will focus on the condition that strikes more young children all the time.
As part of the activities, a special autism jersey has been made for each RiverKings player to wear during the game. Those jerseys will be up on the auction block at the end of the game with proceeds going to help in the awareness effort to combat autism in the DeSoto County area.
A rendition of the autism jersey may be found on the RiverKings web site at www.riverkings.com.
The RiverKings have also been able to obtain an autographed jersey from veteran NHL goalie Olaf Kolzig of the Tampa Bay Lightning, known across the hockey world as "Olie the Goalie." Kolzig joined the Lightning this season after playing several years with the Washington Capitals.
Born in South Africa, Kolzig spent his growing years in several Canadian cities, hence his hockey background. Kolzig was with the Capitals since being drafted in 1989, but became a member of the Lightning in the off-season.
With Washington, he took the Capitals to the Stanley Cup finals in 1998 and became only the tenth NHL goaltender to record four shutouts in one post-season. He is a Vezina Trophy winner (as the NHL's top goaltender) among his many hockey accomplishments.
Kolzig is also known for his work off the ice, including his efforts against autism. Olie helped found the organization "Athletes Against Autism" to raise awareness and is also involved in the Carson Kolzig Foundation for Youth Autism, to honor his son who has the condition.
The RiverKings autism jerseys Saturday night are sponsored by Johnny Coleman Builders.
Tickets for RiverKings hockey action at the DeSoto Civic Center are available from the DCC ticket office or through Ticketmaster. Group and season ticket packages are also a great way to watch the RiverKings in action with your friends and family. Call 662-342-1755 for more information!!
