Manchester Monarchs News Release

LOWELL, MA – Two third period goals scored just 62 seconds apart led to the Lowell Lock Monsters, 4-3, come-from-behind victory over the Manchester Monarchs before 3,491 fans at the Tsongas Arena on Wednesday night.

The loss snapped a Monarchs (45-18-4-3, 97 points) three-game winning streak. With 10 games remaining in the regular season, they lead the second place Hartford Wolf Pack (43-21-3-3, 92 points) by five points in the race for the American Hockey League's Atlantic Division title.

The win gave the third place Lock Monsters (40-23-1-5, 86 points) a three-game winning streak. They trail the Wolf Pack by six points in the Atlantic Division standings.

Lock Monsters center Chuck Kobasew scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal on a one-timer at 11:51 of the third period. Center Eric Staal had the only assist on Kobasew's league-leading 11th game winner of the season. Kobasew's 35 overall goals are second in the league this season.

Kobasew netted his goal just over a minute after center Matthew Lombardi tied the game at 3-3. Lombardi scored from the left circle at 10:49 with center Mike Zigomanis and defenseman Danny Richmond assisting. The goal was his third of the season. Lombardi was skating in just his fifth game after returning from a concussion that had him sidelined since May 3 of last year.

Each team collected a goal in the opening period. Lock Monsters defenseman mark Giordano scored on the power play at 4:31 and Monarchs right wing George Parros tied the game at 13:05.

Giordano recorded his third of the season with a wrist shot from the blue line that zipped over the shoulder of Monarchs goaltender Mathieu Garon (20 shots, 16 saves). Right wing Ryan Bayda and Zigomanis shared assists on the first goal allowed by Garon in three games. Garon entered Wednesday's contest with a four-game winning streak and a shutout streak of over 170 minutes.

A no-look pass from Monarchs rookie center David Steckel led to the Parros goal. Left wing Chris Schmidt also assisted as Parros registered his 10 th of the season by jamming the centering pass through the pads of goaltender Cam Ward (34 shots, 31 saves).

The Lock Monsters regained the lead with a goal from left wing Lynn Loyns. His shot from the right circle squeezed through the pads of Garon at 7:09 of the second period. Center Craig MacDonald had the only assist on Loyns' sixth of the season.

The Monarchs tied the game 60 seconds later with a power play goal from Schmidt, who redirected a shot from center Michael Cammalleri into the Lowell net for his fifth goal of the season. Left wing Dustin Brown also earned an assist on the play.

Another deflection led to the Monarchs third goal as Parros got a piece of a blue line blast from defenseman Jason Holland at 6:03 of the third period. Stecekel had the second assist on Parros' second goal of the night to give the Monarchs their only lead at 3-2.

The Lock Monsters erased the lead just 4:46 later with the Lombardi marker.

With the win, the Lock Monsters clinched the season series. The Monarchs are 4-6-0-1 in 11 games against the Lock Monsters this season. The teams will close out their series with a game at the Verizon Wireless Arena on April 15.

With 31 saves, Ward (24-14-3) earned the win. He has five of the Lock Monsters seven wins against the Monarchs this season. Garon's record dropped to 28-12-3. Five of his losses have come against the Lock Monsters this season.

The Monarchs return to action when they host the Providence Bruins on Friday, April 1 at 7:35 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
