Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
HAMILTON, ON - Yann Danis turned aside 25 of the 26 shots he faced, including 14 saves in the third period for his 24th win of the season, as the Hamilton Bulldogs defeated the Manitoba Moose 2-1 on Wednesday night at Copps Coliseum.
With the win, the Bulldogs' record improves to 32-27-7-5 and they remain in fourth place in the North Division, two points ahead of the Syracuse Crunch for the final playoff spot. Syracuse (70 games) has a game-in-hand over the Bulldogs (71 games).
At 4:17 of the first period, forward Jesse Schultz would open the scoring for the Moose with his sixth goal of the season. Peter Sarno and Nolan Baumgartner tallied assists on the goal.
The Bulldogs tied the game 1-1 when Steve Begin continued his hot hand by scoring his fourth goal in three games at 17:10 of the first period. While short-handed, Begin took a pass from Jason Ward and let a shot go that was stopped by Moose goaltender Alex Auld. Begin then followed his initial shot to the net and buried his own rebound for his seventh goal of the season.
Raitis Ivanans would score the eventual game-winner at the 7:38 mark of the second period. Ivanans one-timed a Corey Locke pass that went through the five-hole of Auld and made the score 2-1.
Manitoba would press for the tying goal in the third period, but Danis was solid between the pipes, stopping all of the 14 shots that Manitoba could muster. Auld also played well at the other end of the ice for the Moose, making 31 saves on 33 shots in the game.
The Hamilton Bulldogs welcomed their 'Two Millionth' fan to the game. George Johnson from Burlington, Ontario was named the honourary 'Two Millionth' fan and went home with the grand prize courtesy of Standard Radio, which included a trip for four to Montreal.
The Bulldogs next game is on Friday, April 1st, when they host the St. John's Maple Leafs for 'Pizza Pizza' Newfoundland Night at Copps Coliseum. The game will mark the 100th and final meeting between the two clubs, as the Maple Leafs AHL franchise will play out of Toronto next season. Game time is 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available for purchase at the Copps Coliseum Box Office, at all Ticketmaster outlets, by calling Ticketmaster at (905) 527-7666 or online at www.ticketmaster.ca.
