Charlotte Knights News Release
(Fort Mill, SC) -- It took two days and 14 innings to complete, but in the end the Charlotte Knights outlasted the Toledo Mud Hens in a marathon game on Wednesday by a score of 5-4 at Knights Stadium.
The game that would not end finally did when Dan Johnson ended it with an RBI-double to the right-field corner that scored Greg Golson all the way from first base in the 14th inning. Golson was 3-for-6 on the night and scored three of the five runs.
In all, the game took exactly four hours to complete after being suspended on Tuesday night in the bottom of the eighth inning tied at 4-4.
Tuesday's game was officially picked up on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. and by the time it was over, the Knights walked away with their first win against Toledo this season.
Donnie Veal (1-0) pitched the final two innings to pick up the victory.
While it rained most of Tuesday afternoon, the skies cleared and the waters parted just in time for baseball at Knights Stadium. It was a scoreless game until the top of the third inning when
back-to-back doubles followed by a two-run home run from former-Knight Brad Eldred gave the Mud Hens a 3-0 lead.
The Knights (16-16) got on the board in their half of the third when Tyler Kuhn singled home Jose Castro from second with a sharp base hit to centerfield. Castro had doubled down the left field line for the Knights' first hit of the game. After Golson walked, both runners advanced on a Dan Johnson groundout to first. Hector Gimenez singled through the left side to bring both runners in and tie the game at 3.
Charlotte took the lead for the first time in the seventh inning when Gimenez doubled home Golson for his third RBI of the night and the Knights led 4-3.
Toledo came right back in the top of the eighth to knot it back up when Brad Eldred scored on a wild pitch on a strikeout.
Then the skies opened.
After a 50-minute rain delay on Tuesday, the game was officially suspended. When the game resumed on Wednesday, neither team could muster any offense in the eighth or ninth innings.
It wasn't until the 14th inning when Johnson's walk-off hit would win the game. After a 30-minute intermission, Wednesday's originally scheduled contest began officially at 9:05 p.m.
The two teams are currently playing a nine inning game.
