Knights Pitchers Provide Relief, Beat 'Wings 6-0
June 24, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release
(Rochester, NY) - Earlier in the day, before first pitch, scheduled starter Zach Stewart was pulled from his start against the Red Wings. Later in the day, it turned out that he and former Knights infielder Brent Lillibridge were traded to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Kevin Youkilis and cash considerations. With that, the Knights would have to look to their bullpen for help on Sunday. No problem.
Four of Charlotte's relief pitchers held the Red Wings to just two hits and the Knights went on to shut out the Red Wings 6-0 on Sunday in game three of their four-game series from Frontier Field in Rochester, NY.
Making the spot start for Charlotte was right-hander Deunte Heath, who threw four scoreless frames. Heath allowed just two hits and struck-out three batters. Following Heath, three relievers combined to toss six hitless innings en route to Charlotte's first win of the series against Rochester.
Jhan Carlos Marinez (2-2, 3.75) was the first to take the mound in relief of Heath. Marinez went two innings to earn the victory. Leyson Septimo followed with two hitless innings and Brian Omogrosso shut the door in the ninth for Charlotte's 44th win of the season.
The Charlotte offense helped out the bullpen by scoring six runs on 12 hits. First baseman Dan Johnson was a key contributor on Sunday. Johnson hit his 18th home run of the season - a two-run shot off of Rochester starter Luke French (1-3, 5.84) in the third inning. Johnson finished the game with the home run, three RBIs and two walks.
History was also made on the day as Charlotte broadcaster Matt Swierad called the 3,000th game of his illustrious career. The Knights will conclude their season series with the Red Wings on Monday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Frontier Field. RHP Charlie Shirek will toe the rubber for Charlotte. The Red Wings will send RHP Cole De Vries to the hill.
