Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - With a 4-3 victory over Buffalo on Sunday evening, the Durham Bulls have now won a season-high four straight games and six out of the last seven. Hours after arriving from Double-A Montgomery, 28 year old Matt Buschmann gave a boost to the depleted Bulls rotation and Matt Mangini's 2 RBI gave Durham just enough offense for the win.
The Bulls bats gave Buschmann an early lead in the second inning thanks to a double from Reid Brignac, who extended his on-base streak to 17 games. Brignac then scored from second on a Jeff Salazar single, putting the Bulls up 1-0.
Buschmann gave the run back in the top of the fourth by allowing a solo home run to Fred Lewis. The blast cleared the Blue Monster and tied things up, but not for long. In the bottom half of the fourth, Durham regained the lead thanks to three straight singles from Mangini, Salazar and Rich Thompson.
Buffalo climbed back into the game with a Josh Rodriguez solo shot in the sixth to tie things at two. Buschmann's old Montgomery teammate, Frank De Los Santos, relieved the Durham starter with two on and one out in the inning. After allowing a hit to the first batter he faced De Los Santos buckled down, striking out Brad Emaus and getting an infield fly out to end the Bisons threat in the sixth.
Replacing Bisons starter and former UNC Tar Heel Matt Harvey, Justin Hampson gave up a leadoff homer to Mangini in the bottom of the sixth, allowing the Bulls to regain the lead. Mangini finished the day going 3-for-4 with the HR, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. De Los Santos (1-0, 0.00) went back to the hill in the 7th and tossed a perfect frame, putting him in line for his first win at the Triple-A level.
The Herd fought back with another solo shot from Lewis off of new reliever Bryan Augenstein. Lewis' second round tripper of the night cut the Bisons defecit to 4-3. Augenstein would settle down and seal the victory, recording the second save of his career.
The Bulls and Bisons wrap up their four game series with a special 12:05pm game Monday afternoon. The contest will be televised nationally on MLB Network. Buffalo has called up RHP Mark Cohoon (0-0, 0.00) from Double-A Binghamton to face RHP Shane Dyer (1-3, 6.19).
