Yankees End Six Game Slide with 4-0 Win in Indy

Indianapolis, IN - Jack Cust and Kevin Russo each had three hits on Sunday afternoon with Cust driving home two and Russo scoring two as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre snapped a season high six game losing streak with a 4-0 win over Indianapolis at Victory Field. While Cust, Russo and Gustavo Molina, who also homered provided the offense, Adam Warren (WP, 5-5) and three relievers combined to pick up the Yankees fifth shutout of the season and stop the losing streak.

The Yankees and Indians played the first two innings without either team getting a runner past second base. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre broke through in the top of the third off Indianapolis starter Jeff Locke (LP, 5-4) with a pair of runs to grab a 2-0 lead. Gustavo Molina launched a leadoff homer high and far over the wall down the line in left to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. The homer was Molina's third of the season and his first since a May 30th homer vs. Toledo at Frontier Field in Rochester. SWB added a second run with two outs in the inning on the first of two runs driven in by Jack Cust. The DH's single to left scored Kevin Russo who was hit by a Locke pitch and went first to third on Ronnier Mustelier's single to center.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added to the advantage off Locke in the fifth inning on Mustelier's RBI fielder's choice to make the score 3-0. Russo led the inning off with an infield single and went first to third on Corban Joseph's single to right field. With runners on the corners Mustelier grounded a Locke offering to shortstop Brian Friday who forced Joseph at second base but could not get Mustelier at first. Russo scored from third and the Yankees led by three.

Both starters pitched through the fifth inning before departing. Warren allowed five hits and no runs with one walk and one strikeout before departing after 96 pitches. Locke allowed three runs (all earned) to the Yankees on eight hits with two walks (one intentional) and a hit batsman.

Cust gave the Yankees a bit of insurance in the top of the seventh inning off Indians reliever Chris Leroux with his team leading 16th homer of the season and his second long ball of the series. The two out solo homer to right field gave Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 4-0 lead.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's bullpen took care of the rest as three pitchers combined preserve the Yankees fifth shutout of the season. Chase Whitley followed up Warren's 5.0 innings with 2.1 scoreless with Juan Cedeno adding 0.2 shutout innings to get the game to the ninth. Ryota Igarashi, in a non-save situation threw a one, two, three ninth inning to keep the shutout intact.

The Yankees win for the first time on the current road trip and improve to 41-36, snapping a season high six game losing streak. Indianapolis' season high seven game winning streak ends as the Indians drop to 46-30.

The wrap up game of the four game series between the Yankees and Indians takes place on Monday night with a 7:05 PM first pitch from Victory Field in Indianapolis. Right hander Dellin Betances (3-5, 5.78 ERA) gets the start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre while Indianapolis counters with right hander Daniel Cabrera (3-3, 4.47 ERA).
