Charlotte Knights News Release
(ALLENTOWN, PA) -- The Charlotte Knights dropped the finale of a six-game series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs by a score of 3-1 on Sunday evening from Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA. Despite the loss, the Knights split the six-game series against the IronPigs with each team winning three games.
The IronPigs scored first on Sunday and did so in the third inning against RHP Parker Markel (1-2, 6.87), who was charged with the loss in relief. Markel allowed one run in the third inning when Ali Castillo scored on an RBI groundout by Yairo Munoz. The game remained 1-0 into the fifth inning when Munoz launched a solo home run off Charlotte reliever Declan Cronin.
Inning by inning, the IronPigs held the Knights hitless - holding a no-hitter into the eighth inning. In the eighth, Charlotte shortstop Romy Gonzalez broke up the no-no with a double.
Two batters later, designated hitter Tyler Neslony broke-up the shutout with an RBI single. With the hit, Neslony cut the Lehigh Valley lead in half, 2-1.
Unfortunately for the Knights, it was all the team would muster in the finale. The Knights were held to just one run for the second time in the series -- the other was a 8-1 loss in the opener on Tuesday.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Dustin Peterson doubled home Lehigh Valley's third run of the game.
In all, the Knights managed just two hits in the game and lost for the second consecutive day. Still, the Knights have won nine of the last 14 games.
Lehigh Valley RHP James Marvel (4-6, 7.43) earned the win out of the bullpen after he tossed a scoreless fourth inning. RHP Tyler Cyr notched his fifth save of the season after he got the final three outs of the game in the top of the ninth inning.
The Knights will now have an off day on Monday before opening a six-game home series against the Syracuse Mets (Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets) from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte on Tuesday night. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 6;35 p.m. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time Knights broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and www.CharlotteKnights.com.
