Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
GREENVILLE, SC -The Greenville Road Warriors announced today that rookies Sam Klassen and Chris Chappell have been reassigned by the New York Rangers to the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League.
Klassen, a defenseman, has seven points (1G, 6A) through 34 games with the Road Warriors. He is second on the Road Warriors, and third among all rookies in the ECHL, with a +11 plus/minus rating. He scored his first professional goal last Saturday 24 seconds into the third period in the Road Warriors' game at Gwinnett. It is Klassen's first promotion to the AHL. He signed a pro contract with the Rangers on July 27, 2009 and went on to post the best numbers of his junior career the next season. With the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League, Klassen earned 30 points (3G, 27A) and 98 penalty minutes in 67 games.
Chappell, a left wing, will be skating in the AHL for the second time in his career. Last season saw him play six games with the Hartford Wolf Pack and earn five penalty minutes. The Pickering, Ontario native has 11 points (4G, 7A) through 24 games this season with the Road Warriors - including six (4G, 2A) in his last seven. Chappell was a free agent signee by the Rangers on July 2, 2009 following a 76-point season (38G, 38A) with the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League in 2008-09. He was limited to 17 games between Hartford and Charlotte (ECHL) last season due to injuries and retained his rookie standing.
