Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - The Clinton bats scored eight times over the first six innings and right-hander George Mieses limited Quad Cities to four runs, three earned over 5.0 innings as the LumberKings defeated the River Bandits 8-5 on a steamy Thursday night at Modern Woodmen Park. Stefen Romero went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and three RBI, helping Mieses to his first win since April 30.

The LumberKings scored twice in the first inning off Bandits' left-hander Ryan Copeland as Mickey Wiswall bounced a single to right scoring Carlos Ramirez and Romero lifted a sacrifice fly to shallow right plating Matt Browning. Mieses came on and gave up the tying runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Ronny Gil and solo home run by Chris Edmondson, but finished the frame with a strikeout of Geoff Klein.

Carlton Tanabe's two-out double out of the reach of diving center-fielder Michael Swinson scored Anthony Phillips to put the Kings right back ahead in the second inning, and Romero's debated two-run homer increased the lead to 5-2 in the third. With Browning on and one out, Romero lifted a Copeland offering high down the left-field line and onto the berm, seemingly foul from behind the plate. However, home plate umpire Garrett Patterson signaled that the ball had hooked inside the pole, giving Romero his fifth home run of the season.

The Bandits cut the lead to 5-3 on an Edmondson single scoring Kolten Wong, but the Clinton offense matched the run with another on Tanabe's RBI single plating Mike McGee in the fourth. The two clubs then traded runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Right-hander Tyler Blandford turned in 2.0 innings with just a run allowed and left-hander Nate Reed (H, 3) pitched a scoreless eighth with a strikeout, but right-hander Jonathan Arias worked into trouble in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases on two walks and a hit batter.

Arias (S, 2) found a way out facing the potential game-winning run, striking out Klein swinging on a nasty slider to end the game. That gave Mieses (W, 2-9) the victory, snapping his seven-game losing streak. The seven runs of support for the right-hander also snapped a string of three-straight starts (17.0 innings) in which he had no run support to work with and were the most runs he's received this year.

Copeland (L, 0-1) surrendered six earned runs over the first 4.0 innings and right-hander Cale Johnson allowed two more over 2.0 innings for Quad Cities. Right-handers Hector Corpas and Aidan Lucas settled the game down with 3.0 scoreless innings combined.

Aside from Romero's big night, Tanabe also finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI while Browning went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. The win, Clinton's first at Modern Woodmen Park in four tries this season, also secures the LumberKings' first winning month this season. They finished June at 13-11.

Edmondson went 3-for-3 with his fourth home run and three RBI, while Wong went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI for the Bandits.

The LumberKings (4-3, 28-49) and River Bandits (3-4, 43-33) continue the series at Modern Woodmen Park tomorrow night, first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. Left-hander Anthony Fernandez (2-2, 4.22) takes the baseball for Clinton in game one as he goes against Quad Cities' right-hander Seth Blair (4-3, 4.65).
