South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Eastlake, OH - After being held to just three hits through seven innings, the South Bend Silver Hawks took advantage of some wildness from the Lake County Captains in the top of the eighth. The Hawks scored four runs on only one hit to rally for a 4-2 victory in the series opener at Classic Park.

Down 2-0, the Hawks scored all four of their runs in the top of the eighth. Roberto Ortiz drew a four-pitch walk from reliever Joey Mahalic (LP, 0-1). Roberto Rodriguez was then hit by a pitch and the ensuing wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Ramon Castillo grounded out to shortstop, scoring Ortiz to make it a one run game. Ender Inciarte followed with a RBI single to center to tie the game at 2-2, and he wisely advanced to second when the throw went home.

With Mike Freeman now batting, Inciarte stole third and scored when second baseman Argenis Martinez threw wildly to plate on Freeman's ground ball. The error put the Silver Hawks in front 3-2 with Freeman ending up at second on the play. Mahalic threw another wild pitch moving Freeman to third, and reliever Dale Dickerson (ND) came in to throw yet another wild pitch, scoring Freeman for the 4-2 lead.

The late wildness by the bullpen erased a strong outing from Lake County starter Mike Rayl (ND), who pitched 6.2 scoreless innings while striking out seven.

South Bend used a quintet of pitchers to hold the Captains to just two runs. Bradin Hagens (ND) made his first start since June 7th and tossed 3.0 scoreless innings as he recovers from an injury. Chris Odegaard (ND) followed and allowed only a two run homer to Jesus Aguilar in his three innings on the hill.

Relievers Dan Taylor (WP, 3-2), Keith Cantwell (ND), and Blake Cooper (SV, 8) all threw scoreless innings as well, lifting the Silver Hawks above .500 in the second half at 4-3. The full season record for South Bend is now 38-38.

The two teams continue the three game series on Friday evening with another 7:00 PM Eastern Time first pitch. RHP J.R. Bradley (2-10, 5.11 ERA) will be on the mound for the Silver Hawks against LHP J.D. Reichenbach (3-1, 3.60 ERA) of Lake County. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:40 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
