Peoria Chiefs News Release
Burlington, IA - The Peoria Chiefs gave up a 2-0 lead on a homer, error and wild pitch in the seventh inning and lost 4-2 to the Burlington Bees on Thursday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 2-5 on the half and 35-42 on the season.
After both teams went down in order in the first, Peoria broke through against Burlington right-hander Nate Long. Richard Jones drew a full-count walk and moved to second on a single by Micah Gibbs. The Chiefs put runners on the corners when Gibbs was retired at second on a fielder's choice of the bat or Ryan Cuneo. Anthony Giansanti gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead with a single to right and Arismendy Alcantara made it 2-0 with a single to center. Alcantara was picked off first and Pierre LePage struck out to end the threat.
Burlington grabbed their first hit of the game when AJ Kirby-Jones doubled to left to start the second inning. Chiefs' lefty Eric Jokisch got a strikeout, groundout and fly out to end the inning and keep the Chiefs up 2-0. Jokisch then retired the Bees in order in each of the next three innings with at least one strikeout in each. Royce Consigli singled with two down in the sixth but LePage made a diving catch down the right-field line to end the inning.
The Chiefs had a chance to break the game open in the seventh against reliever Max Peterson but couldn't come up with the clutch hit. With one down Cuneo drew a walk and Giansanti doubled to left-center. Peterson struck out Alcantara and LePage to end the inning with two in scoring position.
Burlington's Tony Thompson drew a leadoff walk from Jokisch in the bottom of the seventh, the first free pass to the Bees all game. Kirby-Jones came through for the Bees with a two-run home on a full-count pitch to tie the game. The homer, his sixth of the season, tied the game on Burlington's third hit of the game. After a groundout, newcomer Daniel Berlind relieved Jokisch for his first outing in the Cubs organization. His first pitch was hit to shortstop by Douglas Landaeta but Alcantara threw well wide of first and down the right-field line. Landaeta made it all the way to third and after a groundout, he scored on a wild pitch for a 3-2 Bees lead.
The Bees added an insurance run in the eighth against Berlind. Catcher Beau Taylor led off with a triple to right-center and Consigli drew a walk. Ryan Pineda's sacrifice fly to center scored Taylor for a 4-2 Burlington lead.
Jokisch was outstanding through six innings and overall allowed two runs on three hits over 6 1/3 innings. The lefty walked one and struck out a career-high seven. Berlind allowed two runs, one earned, on one hit over 1 1/3 innings. He struck out one, walked two and threw a wild pitch. Alvaro Sosa retired the only batter he faced and threw a wild pitch.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Eric Jokisch (LHP) - Jokisch struck out a career-high seven and turned in his second quality start in three outings. The lefty retired 14 in a row at one point and allowed two runs on three hits and a walk.
