Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Cedar Rapids Kernels scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but fell to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 3-2, Thursday evening at Perfect Game Field. Thursday's game was a pitcher's duel early on, with no runs crossing home plate for either team until the seventh inning.
Wisconsin got a great performance out of starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson, who picked up his third win of the season. Nelson (3-7) pitched eight innings, allowing four hits and no runs while striking out seven Cedar Rapids batters. Kernels starting pitcher A.J. Schugel pitched well, giving up no runs and five hits over five innings of work. Reliever Justin La Tempa (2-5) picked up the loss, allowing three hits and two runs in 2.2 innings of relief.
Cody Hawn put the Timber Rattlers on the scoreboard first in the seventh inning when he blasted a solo home run over the right field wall. Wisconsin added a second run in the eighth inning with a Nick Shaw RBI double that scored T.J. Mittelstaedt. The Timber Rattlers scored their third run of the game in the ninth inning when Chad Stang grounded into a double play that scored Franklin Romero Jr.
Cedar Rapids didn't go down without a fight, rallying in the bottom of the ninth inning to keep the game close. Jeremy Cruz doubled home Chris Giovinazzo and Rolando Gomez to make the score 3-2, but Timber Rattlers closer Greg Holle induced a double play and got Justin Bass to fly out to nail down his 16th save of the season
