Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Dayton, OH - Keith Castillo delivered a three-run single in the top of the eighth inning, breaking a 3-3 tie for the Hot Rods on Thursday night. After Bowling Green staved off a Dayton rally in the bottom of the inning, the Hot Rods (4-3, 45-32) had their third straight victory with a 6-5 triumph over the Dragons (4-3, 39-38). The win is the third straight for the Hot Rods and moves them into a tie for first place through the first week of the second half.

The late volleying began in a 3-3 game in the eighth inning. With two outs, the Hot Rods put together a rally with an infield single and a pair of walks issued by relief pitcher Luca Panateri (L; 1-1). That brought up Castillo, who took a 2-2 pitch and blooped it down the right field line to plate all three runs for a 6-3 Hot Rods lead.

The Dragons used the bottom of the eighth to pull back within a run. The first two men singled before reliever Eliazer Suero (W; 4-3) struck out Juan Duran. After an error loaded the bases, an infield single and a groundout plated two runs to cut the deficit to 6-5 before Suero retired the side.

That was as close as the Dragons could come. After Blaine Howell kept it a one-run game in the top of the ninth, Chris Rearick breezed through the bottom half of the inning for his 12th save.

The Hot Rods had built an early 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth against starter Kyle Lotzkar. With one out, Derek Dietrich singled before being balked to second base. Steve Tinoco followed with an RBI single, making it 1-0 Hot Rods. After a walk to Robby Price, Kevin Kiermaier laced a single to left field to score Tinoco. On the play, a throwing error allowed Price to come in to cap off the three-run inning.

It stayed 3-0 through five innings as starter Braulio Lara turned in one of his best outings of the season. He hurled five frames without giving up a run. He surrendered just three hits with three walks and three K's.

Lara left in line for the win until Eliazer Suero ran into trouble in the sixth. With one out and a man at second, Suero gave up a run-scoring single to Frank Pfister. Two batters later a home run by Tucker Barnhart tied the game at 3-3, taking away Lara's potential win.

In addition to Castillo's clutch base hit, Kiermaier led the Hot Rods offense with two more hits and a walk, scoring the game-winning run in the eighth. He has hit safely in six straight, one behind Cody Rogers, who extended his hitting streak to seven games with a fourth inning single. Tinoco and Price were both on base twice, scoring a pair of runs each.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 6:07 PM CDT on Friday night. LHP Enny Romero (2-4, 4.90) starts the series against Dayton RHP Josh Smith (7-3, 1.94). You can follow the game with Tom Gauthier at 5:40 PM CDT on 1340 WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
