'Kings blitz Blazers, triumph 5-0
January 16, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Southaven, MS - The two-time defending CHL champion Memphis Riverkings rebounded from last night's dramatic shootout loss, ringing up 5 unanswered goals against the Oklahoma City Blazers before a crowd of 4,454 at the DeSoto Civic Center.
The game was settled early on, as the 'Kings benefited off an early bounce, as forward Trent Dickson's shot deflected off the stick of Jay Neal and beat Oklahoma City goaltender Sean Connors. The goal was Neal's 13th tally on the season, and would stand up as the eventual game winner.
The 'Kings extended their lead early into the frame, with captain Don Parsons inching one goal closer to the 30 mark, recording his 29th tally of the season after a beautiful move past goaltender Sean Connors.
From that point on, the âKings' offense came courtesy of newcomer Ryan Courtney, who notched his 2nd goal of the season off of a nice feed from Brian Tucker just past the 10 minute mark of the second period.
Strong play from goalie Mike Minard kept the game 2-0 until the third period, when Courtney hit pay dirt twice in rapid succession, completing a natural hat trick with a pair of goals over a 3 minute stretch halfway through the third period.
The rest of the contest belonged to Minard, who shook off last night's disappointing loss by saving each of the 28 shots fired his direction. Minard recorded the win, his 2nd shutout on the season, by withstanding a flurry of late penalties.
Oklahoma City goaltender Sean Connors did not fare nearly as well, getting shelled for 5 Memphis goals on 21 shots.
The RiverKings next contest will be on Saturday, January 17 in Bossier-Shreveport as they take on the Mudbugs for a share in the Northeast Division lead. Gametime will be at 7:05 pm CST. The next home game for the RiverKings will take place on Friday, January 23, as they match up against the Indianapolis Ice.
