January 16, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Laredo Bucks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas â The Laredo Bucks were down to 12 skaters, but they battled their way to 3-1 win over the newly revamped Corpus Christi Rayz at Memorial Coliseum. Forward Chris Grenville scored a pair of goals and goalie David Guerrera stopped 24 of 25 shots to power the Bucks to their seventh straight win. Laredo has recorded at least a point in 22 of the last 24 games and improves to a CHL and Southeast division best 31-5-2 with 64 points. The Bucks are home Saturday night against the Odessa Jackalopes. Face-off is set for 7:30 p.m. Call (956) 718-BUCKS (2825) for tickets or more information or go online at www.laredobucks.com.
Playing shorthanded with just 12 skaters the Bucks naturally got on the scoreboard shorthanded when killing off a Rayz power play chance. Forward Jeff Bes picked up the puck on the left wall and fed it backdoor for Grenville who tapped it in at 7:15. It was the Bucks CHL leading 13th shorthanded tally and Grenville's 24th of the year. Late in the period the Bucks went on the power play, but it was Corpus Christi's turn shorthanded. In his Rayz debut forward Paul Dunphy slid the puck across the goal line as he was flat on his stomach just inside the right circle at 18:15 to tie the game.
A little over halfway thru the second period the Bucks went on another power play. Forward Patrik Nilson ripped a shot from the slot that hit the goalpost and deflected to defenseman J.F. David who fired it by Rayz goalie Greg Hewitt at 11:27 for a 2-1 Bucks advantage. That was the only goal of the second frame.
In the third period the Bucks peppered Hewitt from every angle with shots, but he stood tall in net. With less than a minute to go the Rayz pulled the goalie, but Grenville capped the scoring with an empty netter for his second of the night to seal the win. FINAL SCORE Laredo 3, Corpus Christi 1.
Guerrera picked up his fourth straight win and improved to 16-3-0. Hewitt in his Rayz debut stopped 40 of 42, but took the hard luck loss. The Bucks were 1-8 on the power play, while Corpus Christi was 0-9.
The Rayz debuted six new players on the roster tonight along with head coach Malcom Cameron. Cameron came to Corpus Christi from the Columbus Stars in the United Hockey League. The Stars suspended operations last week.
