New Players Signed, Three More Leave

January 16, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

Corpus Christi, TX – The Corpus Christi Rayz made several player moves and significant changes to their lineup, Rayz General Manager/Senior Vice President Pat Dunn announced Friday afternoon. Just a day after trading two, the deals continued to fly out of Corpus Christi since new Head Coach Malcolm Cameron arrived earlier in the week.

Six players came long with Cameron, and on Friday afternoon, all six were signed and made their Rayz debut in a 3-1 loss to the Laredo Bucks. The Rayz signed goaltenders Greg Hewitt and Craig Hillier, defensemen Gary Zinck and Matt Medvecz and forwards Matt Noga and Gary Dunphy. Dunphy got the lone Rayz goal in Friday night's loss and Hewitt was outstanding in defeat, making 40 saves in his first game a member of the Rayz.

In order to make room on the Rayz roster, the Rayz were forced to lose some players. Corpus Christi placed defensemen Byron Pool and Jan Vrtik on waivers and traded goaltender Brent Belecki to the Fort Worth Brahmas for future consideration. The Rayz also placed forward Cosmo Dupaul on 14-day injured reserve, retroactive back to the last Rayz game on January 10th.

Thursday night, the Rayz completed two trades that sent goaltender Rob Garrick to Lubbock and forward Chris Page to Tulsa. When Cameron came to the team, he made it very clear that moves like this were in the near future. The new-look Rayz will continue their race towards the postseason Saturday night as the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees come to Corpus Christi as part of three games in four nights at the Memorial Coliseum. The weekend of hockey continues on through Monday's holiday as the Rayz host the Lubbock Cotton Kings for the first time this season. Tickets are still available for both games.
