Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Nick Kingham tossed six solid innings as the Opening Day starter but was dealt the loss when former teammate Michael Martinez homered to help give the Columbus Clippers (1-0) a 4-0 shutout of the Indianapolis Indians (0-1) on Thursday night at Victory Field.
Kingham worked efficiently alongside Minor League Baseball's debut of the "pitch timers," and cruised with just four hits and four strikeout in a tidy, 2-hour and 26-minute affair.
The top pitching prospect has now authored a quality start of no more than three runs over at least six innings of work in 10 of his 15 total Triple-A assignments.
His counterpart Bruce Chen tossed six scoreless frames and received just enough support from Martinez to earn the win. Martinez, who lifted just one home run in 91 games with the Tribe last season, struck at an opportune time on Thursday to break up the scoreless affair.
Jeff Manship struck out five over his two unblemished innings before Bryan Price completed the combination shutout with a scoreless ninth.
Newly acquired first baseman Hunter Morris finished 2-for-4 with a double for the Indians.
