Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky.- It was sunny and 65' as the Louisville Bats (0-2) took on the Toledo Mud Hens (2-0) for game two of the four game series after a brutal loss of 13-0 the previous night. Louisville was hopeful to bounce back and wouldn't go down without a fight, falling shy to the Mud Hens by a final score of 7-6.
Starting on the mound for Louisville, right-hander Dylan Axelrod gave up a run in the first inning when Toledo's Xavier Avery scored after reaching on a leadoff line drive single. Axelrod bounced back and faced the minimum of batters in four straight innings and was relieved by righty Ryan Dennick in the seventh. Axelrod allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks while striking in six innings.
Toledo's starting pitcher, left-hander Kyle Ryan, gave up a double to Louisville first baseman Ivan De Jesus Jr., Louisville's first double of the season. Designated hitter Irving Falu scored De Jesus Jr. tying the game at 1-1, Louisville's first run of the season.
The Mud Hens stayed scoreless from the second through the fifth, Louisville took advantage both offensively and defensively. Left fielder Donald Lutz lined a double to left field before right fielder Steve Selsky notched Louisville's first triple of the season scoring Lutz and second baseman Jermaine Curtis, who reached on a walk, making it 3-1. Ryan was pulled with two outs in the fifth after allowing three earned runs, on four hits and three walks while striking out one.
Toledo tied the game with two runs in the top of the sixth off of two Louisville errors, but Louisville regained their advantage with a two run home run by Selsky. The right fielder's blast was Louisville's first of the year and Selsky's fourth RBI of the night, tying a career high.
Both teams scored a run in the seventh and Toledo added one more in the eighth inning making it a 6-5 game heading to the ninth.
Elizabethtown native, right-handed pitcher Nate Adcock (0-1, L, BS), who entered with two outs in the eighth, hit the first batter in the ninth and was relieved by right-hander Donovan Hand. A single put runners on the corners before a weak ground ball by catcher Manny Pina tied the game at six. With two outs shortstop Dixon Machado drove in the game-winning run.
Louisville fell short, leaving two on base in the bottom of the ninth for a final score of 7-6. Right-hander Alex Wilson (1-0, W) worked the final two innings for Toledo earning the win.
