Syracuse Mets News Release
Moosic, PA (April 10, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs, Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, took down Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 6-0, Friday night, controlling the game from start to finish. Taylor Jordan was outstanding in his first start of the year, holding the RailRiders to just two hits in six shutout innings. Jordan struck out five and walked only one on 75 pitches.
Jordan was helped by a Chiefs three-run second inning. Cutter Dykstra started with a single off RailRiders starter Jaron Long. Jason Martinson then reached on a bunt single. After a groundout moved the runners to second and third, and a strikeout, Caleb Ramsey picked up his first two Triple-A RBIs on a single, to give Syracuse a 2-0 lead. A batter later, Emmanuel Burriss doubled home Ramsey to give the Chiefs the three-run edge.
An inning later, the Chiefs' bats stayed hot. Tony Gwynn, Jr. reached on an error on second baseman Rob Refsnyder. Ian Stewart followed with an RBI double to bring in an unearned run. Stewart came in three batters later on a single by Martinson to give Syracuse a 5-0 advantage.
The game stayed 5-0 until the sixth. Martinson finished off Long's night with an 11-pitch walk to start the frame. After the RailRiders turned to Diego Moreno out of the bullpen, Mark Minicozzi bounced back to the mound. Moreno's throw tipped off the glove of Nick Noonan and went into center field, allowing Martinson to reach third on the Noonan error. He came around to score on Ramsey's sacrifice fly to extend the lead to six.
All six runs were charged to Long, although just three were earned. He walked two and struck out three in his five-plus innings.
The scoring ended there as both bullpens were outstanding. In the final three-and-a-half frames, relievers combined to strike out eleven batters, including six in a row from Moreno and three from Chiefs left-hander Matt Grace. Syracuse did put two batters on against Brandon Pinder in the top of the ninth, but did not score. Evan Meek finished off the ninth for the Chiefs.
These teams are back in action tomorrow for game three of this four-game set. Syracuse turns to right-hander Taylor Hill against southpaw Matt Tracy for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Game time is set for 4:05 p.m.
