Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- In a back-and-forth game, the Tides scored four runs over the final two innings to come back from a three-run deficit and hand Charlotte their first loss of 2015, 7-6.
With the Knights up 6-3, Norfolk used four consecutive doubles in the eighth inning to tie the game 6-6.
The tie was briefly preserved when Jared Mitchell made a sliding catch for the final out in the eighth inning, stranding a runner on third base. But an inning later the comeback was completed when Dariel Alvarez beat-out a near double-play to allow Paul Janish to score from third.
Despite not reaching base in the first three innings, the Knights took the first lead of the ballgame with five consecutive hits in the fourth.
Leury Garcia scored the first run of the inning, smacking a single to left field, stealing second base, and then scoring on a Neftali Soto double to deep center. Matt Davidson was then robbed of an RBI-single when Tides left fielder Nolan Reimold threw Soto out at the plate. Davidson and Engel Beltre - who also singled - would then score on a Trayce Thompson triple.
After tallying only one hit through the first four innings, Norfolk would add three runs of their own in the fifth with three consecutive hits off of Knights starter RHP Chris Beck.
The Knights then took advantage of three Tides errors to score three unanswered runs and take a 6-3 lead.
Kevan Smith started the fifth inning by reaching base on a Chris Parmelee two-base error in right field. The Charlotte catcher was then driven-in by Garcia's second single of the game to give the Knights back the lead, 4-3.
Garcia and Tyler Saladino pulled off a double-steal later in the inning, with Saladino scoring when Tides catcher Steve Clevenger's throw went into left field; giving the Knights a two-run advantage.
The third Norfolk error led to a third unearned run in the sixth inning, when Beltre scored on a Matt Tuiasosopo ground-out to push the lead to three.
Seven of the nine Knights starters recorded at least one hit, with four contributing multi-hit efforts. Saladino tallied a multi-hit game for the second straight night, adding three stolen bases for a total of four this season.
Norfolk reliever Chaz Roe (1-0, 0.00) earned the win, while RHP Daniel Webb (0-1, 4.50) was saddled with the loss.
The Knights and Tides continue their four-game series on Saturday night, as LHP Carlos Rodon takes the mound for Charlotte, and RHP T.J. McFarland gets the nod for the Tides. The first Saturday game of 2015 brings the first KnightinGals performance, presented by Hickory Tavern. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark and gates are set to open at 6:00 p.m. Rodon, the number three overall pick in last year's draft, will make his fourth career Triple-A start on Saturday.
