Madison Capitols News Release
Kearney, NE - The Madison Capitols (18-21-4-3) never could discover the offensive rhythm on this night, as the Tri-City Storm (23-12-7-4) shut out the Capitols by a final score of 3-0 on Friday night at the Viaero Center.
After going well over a year since their last meeting, the Capitols and Storm began the game with a tentative opening period that saw just one power play per side, no goals, and a spirited scrap between Tri-City's Brandon Duhaime and Madison's Eugene Fadyeyev.
In net, Ryan Edquist had a good first period, making all nine saves he was asked to make, without being tested too strongly by a Storm attack that scored 13 goals in the prior three games.
At the other end, the Capitols turned 11 shots on Jake Kielly's net, but the Storm goalie remained stout as well on a night where he entered having gone 10-0-3 in his prior 13 appearances.
As both teams stayed disciplined in the second period, only power play opportunity presented itself, and the Storm took full advantage at 4:47 of the middle frame. After Tommy Muck lost his stick in the right corner, he scurried to retrieve it. Just as he did that, Alex Limoges cut in front and jammed the puck on goal, where Dan Labosky cleaned up the rebound for Tri-City to vault the Storm to a 1-0 lead.
The Capitols' best chance of the second period might have come in the first moments of the frame, as Sam McCormick scooped up a puck in the slot off a turnover from behind the Tri-City net, but his quick wrister missed the target behind Kielly.
Late in a second period that was almost entirely five-on-five action, Edquist made a quick save off a Jake Wahlin shot, but could not cover, resulting in Carson Meyer's 26th goal of the season and a 2-0 Storm lead after two periods.
Any thoughts of a comeback were put to pasture in the final period as Limoges picked up a tally off a Wade Allison backhand try just 18 seconds into the final period to round out the scoring. The Capitols only had two power play chances all night, and Kielly finished his evening with 30 stops for his second shutout of the season.
The Capitols' six-game point streak came to a close as Tri-City improved to 5-0-1 in its last six contests. Madison has now been shut out four times in 2015-16.
The two teams will reconvene on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. before the Capitols complete the busy weekend with a stopover in Sioux City on Sunday against the Musketeers at 3:05 p.m. Each game can be heard on 106.7 FM, 1670 AM, The Zone in Madison, or online at www.MadCitySportsZone.com. The Capitols then return home for a two-game weekend on Friday & Saturday, March 11-12, at the Alliant Energy Center for a pair of 7:05 p.m. puck drops against Sioux Falls and Youngstown respectively.
March 11 marks the Capitols' Cross Check Cancer initiative, as proceeds from ticket package purchases will benefit the UW Carbone Cancer Center, in conjunction with UW Health Sports Medicine, the Capitols' 2015-16 presenting sponsor.
March 12 brings about the return of four-legged friends to the Coliseum on Pucks N' Paws night, presented by Animart. Dogs will be permitted into the Alliant Energy Center on game night, and each pup will receive a doggy goody bag!
