Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Urbandale, IA - The Stampede tried to rally from a three-goal, third period deficit, but came up a goal short in a 4-3 loss Friday night at Buccaneer Arena. Parker Tuomie led the way with two goals while Lawton Courtnall added another for the Herd who fell to 21-21-3 on the season and just 5-14-1 on the road. The Herd trail the Waterloo Black Hawks by just a point for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
The Stampede found themselves on a five-minute power play just 1:55 into the hockey game and converted just seconds after the power play expired when Parker Tuomie scored. Lean Bergman sent a pass to Tuomie who beat Des Moines goaltender Jan Ruzicka to give the Herd a 1-0 lead at the seven minute mark. The Bucs would respond with two goals of their own four minutes later, the first coming at 11:15 with teams playing 4-on-4. Chris Allemon raced down the right wing boards and wristed a shot past the glove side of Stampede goaltender Ales Stezka to tie the game 1-1. 20 seconds later, on the power play, the Bucs struck again, this time off a rebound into the slot where Ty Pelton-Byce buried a shot to give the Bucs a 2-1 advantage. Sioux Falls trailed by a goal after one despite outshooting Des Moines 18-12.
Des Moines wasted little time adding to their lead in the second, scoring just 57 seconds into the period when Zach Jordan beat Stezka. The Bucs extended their lead to 4-1 at 7:18 of the period when Allemon sent a perfect pass through the Stampede defense and onto the tape of Kenneth Hausinger who came in on a breakaway and wristed the puck past the left pad of Stezka to give the Bucs a 4-1 lead on their home ice. Stefanos Lekkas would come off the bench in relief and stop seven shots.
The Herd knew they had their work cut out for them down by three entering the final period, but pulled within two goals at 10:11 when Lawton Courtnall re-directed a blast from Joe Maguire to make it a 4-2 game. Sioux Falls kept chipping away at the Bucs and eventually made it a one goal game at 15:38 when Tuomie tallied his second of the night. The Herd's leading scorer took a pass from Jack Suter and weaved his way through the Bucs defense before backhanding a shot from the slot past Ruzicka to bring it within one at 4-3 in the final minutes. Sioux Falls had a to kill of a two-minute penalty on Lekkas for delay of game when his pass sailed over the glass in the defensive zone, but still had 90 seconds with the goaltender pulled to try and tie the game, but couldn't get the goal they needed and came up short.
Sioux Falls and Des Moines finished the night with 35 shots. The Bucs were 1-for-2 on the power play while the Herd finished 0-for-3.
The Stampede return home Saturday night to face the Sioux City Musketeers at 7:05 PM for the ever famous Sioux Nation Pet Clinic Wiener Dog Races in between periods. Tickets are still available through the KELOLAND Box Office or any Ticketmaster outlet. The Stampede office will also be open 12-4 PM for any ticketing needs in person or by phone at 336-6060.
