Keys Take Series with Exciting Finale

3B Dale Mollenhauer belted a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth as the Keys went on to defeat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, 6-5. Frederick squandered a three-run lead in the top of the eighth but the Mollenhauer homer helped them prevail. The Keys improved to 31-22 following the win and are tied with the Pelicans for the best record in the Carolina League. Frederick also leads the Blue Rocks by one and a half games in the Northern Division.

For the fourth time in the four-game series, Myrtle Beach was the first to score. C Zach Zaneski drove home 3B Michael Olt in the top of the second inning. The Pelicans added another run on a RBI single by CF Ryan Strausborger in the third inning.

Trailing by two runs entering the bottom of the third and facing RHP Joe Wieland, the Keys began to mount a comeback. Wieland entering Thursday night with the top ERA in the Carolina League at 1.53 but six of his 10 earned runs allowed on the year were against Frederick. CF Steve Bumbry led off the home half of the third with a double down the left field line. Two batters later, Bumbry moved to third on a Tyler Townsend single. LF Kipp Schutz followed up with a double to left. Bumbry scored easily on the play and Townsend scored as well after Jared Hoying committed a fielding error in left field. RF Tyler Kolodny drove home Schutz to cap off the three-run third for the Keys.

Frederick added two more runs off Wieland in sixth to give the Keys a 5-2 lead. Wieland exited the game after six innings of work. He allowed five runs on 11 hits while striking out six. 11 of Wieland's 15 earned runs allowed this year have come against Frederick.

Following the tough third inning, LHP Nathan Moreau retired the next nine batters he faced. After a scoreless seventh, Moreau came back out for the eighth. 2B Santiago Chirino led off the inning and reached on a fielding error by SS Garabez Rosa. SS Leury Garcia then reached on an infield single. After a wild pitch and a groundout, LF Jared Hoying brought home Chirino on another infield single. The Hoying hit was the final pitch for Moreau on the night. Facing RHP Justin Moore, CF Ryan Strausborger grounded out to third but Garcia scored to make it a one run. With two outs and Hoying on third, Michael Olt singled Hoying home to tie the game at five.

Moreau tossed a season-high 7.1 frames allowing five runs, two earned, on six hits. He walked three and struck out three on the night.

Myrtle Beach inserted RHP Trevor Hurley for the bottom of the eighth. Hurley faced Dale Mollenhauer to start the inning off. After fouling off a few pitches, Mollenhauer drove a Hurley offering over all three tiers of fencing in right field for a go-ahead blast. Mollenhauer's third homer over past two weeks put the Keys in front 6-5.

RHP Sean Gleason closed out the ninth for his 13th save of the year. Justin Moore picked up his second win in as many nights while Trevor Hurley fell to 0-2.

The Keys welcome the Salem Red Sox to town for a three-game series on Friday night. RHP Ryohei Tanaka (2-0, 1.45) will take the hill for Frederick while RHP Anthony Ranaudo will make his Carolina League debut for Salem. First pitch from Harry Grove Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
