Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Salem, VA - Shawn McGill's leadoff home run in the 11th, and Phil Gosselin's two-run triple four batters later, lifted the Hillcats over the Salem Red Sox 9-7 in extra innings Wednesday night.

The Hillcats took the early lead with a solo home run from McGill in the top of the third inning.

The lead would change hands four times before the dust settled at LewisGale Field, beginning with a three-run bottom of the third inning for the Red Sox.

Adam Milligan doubled in the fourth inning, stole third and scored as the throw down to third base went into left field. The Hillcats trailed 3-2.

Milligan then tied the game with his eighth home run of the season in the fifth. Two more runs followed the blast and the Hillcats regained the lead 5-3.

Two errors for the Hillcats led to a run for the Red Sox in the sixth inning. Dan Butler doubled home two more runs in the seventh giving Salem a 6-5 lead.

Lynchburg remained down one heading into the ninth inning. L.V. Ware led off the ninth with a single. He stole second base two batters later, as Andrelton Simmons struck out swinging for out number two. Phil Gosselin singled home Ware to tie the game 6-6. Gosselin went stranded on the bases, and the Hillcats held the Red Sox scoreless in the ninth sending the game to extras.

After a blank 10th frame, McGill's second home run and Gosselin's two-run triple put the 'Cats up three heading into the bottom of the 11th.

LHP Ryan Buchter who had been in the game since then ninth entered the 11thfor Lynchburg. After a strikeout, a single and a walk, RHP Matthew Frevert relieved Buchter with runners at first and second, and the tying run at the plate. Frevert induced a fly out to center field and up came Butler with two outs. Butler hit a walk-off grand slam off Frevert in the bottom of the ninth just two days earlier. Butler nearly ruined Frevert night again, as he blasted a ball off the top of the wall in left field scoring one. With the tying run at second base, Frevert struck out the next batter to end the game and the Hillcats held on to win 9-7.

Buchter (1-0) earned the win. Salem's Dennis Neuman (0-1) surrendered the three runs in the 11th and took the loss. Frevert recorded his first save of the year holding the Red Sox off in the 11th.

The Hillcats improved to 23-28 with the victory after going 6-1 on their past road trip. The Hillcats return home Thrusday night to finish their series with the Red Sox and begin an eight-game homestand. First pitch Thursday night is scheduled for 7:05 pm, with the gates opening at 6:00 pm.
