Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg, VA- After back-to-back hits with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, it looked like the Hillcats might have another late-inning comeback in them. However, it wasn't to be, as the tying run was left on first, and Lynchburg lost 3-2 to Salem Thursday night.
Salem scored the first runs of the game. In the top of the third, the Red Sox scored two runs, one from a double by Reynaldo Rodriguez, and the other from a sacrifice fly by Mark Wagner.
The Hillcats cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third. With runners on first and second, Andrelton Simmons singled into right field scoring Braeden Schlehuber from second to make the score 2-1.
Salem responded in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of an error by left fielder Geraldo Rodriguez that allowed Shannon Wilkerson to reach second base. David Mailman followed with a double to score Wilkerson, and the score became 3-1.
The Hillcats had their opportunities to score throughout the game. They had a runner in scoring position for five straight innings starting in the third, but only scored the one run in the fifth during that stretch.
Lynchburg was down to their final at-bat in the bottom of the ninth. After two outs were quickly recorded, Schlehuber hit a long drive to left that bounced off the wall for a double. LV Ware followed him with a single, scoring Schlehuber, cutting the lead to 3-2. The next batter, Todd Cunningham, put a jolt into the ball, however, center fielder Peter Hissey was able to track it down on the warning track to end the game.
Ryan Pressly pitched six innings, giving up just one run to earn the win and move to 4-4. Zeke Spruill had another solid outing for the Hillcats, throwing seven innings giving up three runs, two of them earned. Michael Gleason made his debut for Salem, pitching three innings and earning the save.
Salem gets back to .500 with the win at 26-26. Lynchburg fell to 23-29.
The Hillcats will welcome the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to town Friday night. It also starts a Braves Weekend at City Stadium. The first giveaway of the weekend will be a Bobby Cox figurine that will go to the first 1,000 fans through the gates on Friday. Righty Willie Kempf (3-3) will start for the Hillcats, and righty Justin Grimm (1-0) will start for the Pelicans. First pitch is at 7:05 pm, and the gates will open at 6.
