Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

RHP Joe Wieland (5-3, 1.53) at LHP Nathan Moreau (5-3, 3.97)

PILING UP THE HARDWARE: On Tuesday, tonight's Pelicans starter Joe Wieland won Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season. He earned the weekly award for his seven shutout innings in a win over Wilmington on Saturday. Wieland won the award four weeks ago for his dominant game in Potomac on May 4, when he struck out 13 Nationals in six shutout innings of two-hit ball. Joe also won Pitcher of the Week last season when he was in the California League with high-A Bakersfield. He struck out a career-high 14 in seven innings on August 3 against Visalia.

DON'T WALK: Joe Wieland has only walked three batters in 59 innings this season. That is the second best ratio in all of Minor League Baseball, Brad Meyers (AA/AAA - WAS) has only issued two free passes in 64.2 innings. He's struck out 60 over 48 and a third innings since his last base on balls on April 18 vs. Winston-Salem (Andy Wilkins).

THE RACE HEATS UP: Despite last night's loss, the Pelicans (31-21) maintained a four-and-a-half-game lead in the Southern Division after Kinston (26-25) fell at home to Wilmington. Still, the K-Tribe has won eight of their last ten and 12 of their last 15. The fading Salem Red Sox are are 5-19 in their last 24 and five and a half back. Even if Myrtle Beach finishes 9-9, the Indians would have to win 14 of their final 19 to catch the Birds at 40-30.
